Short question. Does anyone have a 55" extreme tools professional box? How do you like it? How does it hold up to heavy tools? Will it last for 20 years of industrial use?
Long story: I'm a millwright at a mine off the road system in Alaska. When I first started I picked up a used 56" matco and a boss who's no longer here told me not to bring it and buy a Knaack box. I picked up a used Knaack model 49, put a 40" china freight top box on it and shipped it up. When I got up here I was the only one with a Knaack in the shop and everyone else has roller cabinets. After using the Knaack for a year I'm way out of room with a lot more tools to acquire, the drawers are tiny, and I'm regretting selling the matco. If I was contracting and traveling all the time the Knaack would be nice for the durability though it's not what I need. What I'm doing my box will probably be in the same spot till I quit and it's crated up and shipped off to the next mine where it sits in 1 spot for the time I'm there.
I figure I have about 20 years left of turning wrenches if I stay on my tools so I'd like to buy a box to last till I retire with some room to grow. My tools are heavy any only getting heavier and bigger the more I buy with 3/4" drive stuff, 2"+ wrenches, pullers, ect. Many mines have space issues and cringe when you say you are going to show up with a 72" wide box. 56" wide is usually as big as you can get away with. They never say anything about depth or height though so I'm thinking 30" deep is the key to get the most out of my real easte. Right now the plan is to sell my Knaack, buy a bottom box, keep my 40" china freight top box, and eventually buy a full width top box.
Being up in Southeast Alaska doesn't help, it's a craigslist desert and I don't think I've ever seen a used tool truck box posted. We have a local snapon guy and some times he has used boxes though the odds of finding something 30" used deep are slim. The China Freight box I have is loaded pretty light and decent though I have my doubts about it lasting another 20 years. I either need someone who will drop ship a box to the barge company in Seattle or I need to fly down, buy a box, rent a truck, and drop it off at the barge and fly back to Alaska.
If I'm dead set on a 30" deep 54 to 56" wide box there's very few options besides tool truck boxes. Extreme tools professional 55" 11 drawer seems like the best bang for the buck. Tool Vault looks nice though they don't make a 55" top box. Any other options I should be looking at that are 30" deep and offer a top box? There's a lot of 22 and 24" deep boxes though very few 30" options.
