Took my 3.5 year old out for his first time yesterday. Everything went good until we were getting ready to head back to the trailer. As i was turning around my tire pinched a big rock in-between the link and rolled it up into my coilover bending the shit out of the shaft, and leaving us with a slow drive back to the trailer. Shocks are 2.5x18x7/8 shaft sway away. I cant find just the shaft ,anyone have a good source? The ones I find have the lower eyelet atached and are double what a shaft should be. I can find king shafts for 80 bucks does anyone know if they are interchangeable?

kartek would be my best guess on having access to them.

next stem would be to do some measuring and maybe have a king modified to match your dims.

alltech or accutune might be of help as well.

Take it apart measure it up buy some chrome rod and make a new one. They are pretty simple parts.

AFE, Poly or Accutune would be my first calls. SAW parts are hard to find since AFE bought them.

Also I have seen several people destroy the rod and rod end trying to take them apart. That might be why this all the combination assembled.

I have a new (I think) pair of 18s hanging in my garage minus the coil hardware. If you're interested I'll either sell them to you or buy the parts off of yours.

It doesn't help you directly but I figured I'd throw it out there...

Thats a good point guess I'll try and get it off today and see what happens , before I order a shaft.

I've stopped short of "destruction" but have yet to get a SAW rod end or top cap off without discoloring the anodizing from heat. They put a lot of red loctite in the ones I've disassembled. I've put those discolored parts back together and continued to use with no issue, but if the discoloration bothers you, either try heating the shaft since it's wasted anyway, or have a gentler touch with the torch than I do.

Heat is what I was thinking. I dont care if the ano gets messed up. The red is kind of a pinkish red anymore anyways. Thats why I think blue is the best choice for anodizing, it just turns light blue instead of pink or purple. I'll post up later how it goes. I'm on kid duty this morning so it will be this afternoon.

Now that AFE owns the SAW brand, are those even worth buying anymore?

As far as I know they haven’t changed the design which was good, but parts are very difficult to come by. IMO AFE really wants to do chassis kits and not sell universal parts and shocks.

I thought about getting rid of all my sway away stuff, but the reality is I don’t use it enough to make it matter.

Well was able to get out to the garage for a bit. Good news and bad a little heat and I t came off but the threads are fed up. Probably gonna see if we have a helicoil the right size at work tomorrow. A tap might do it but I'd feel better with the helicoil. Some pics of the inside if anyone cares. Figured I'd get a seal kit for it while its apart. The only question I have is do I need to drive the du bushing out of the sealhead to change the wiper seal?

You should be able to pull the seal out with a pic. To install a new seal bend it stick it in and let it expand.

basically you need to bend it like the picture above. That is a seal installation tool that I doubt you will need.

https://www.shockseals.com

as long as all the teflon is there i wouldnt worry about changing it. measure out the valving and post it up, might as well revalve it since you are in there

Shock seals .com is where I was looking but like you said I'm leaning towards leaving it alone for now. It wasn't leaking and everything inside looks new to me. I probably won't mess with revalving it now. This is probably its last season before I tear it down and start building a small v8 4 seater. Gotta have a family wagon with my 2 boys that are always wanting to go.

Thanks wasnt sure what was the norm. Didn't make since that the bushing wasn't a part in every seal kit.

I've never done shocks but on hydraulic rams I would put that seal in hot water that was still comfortable to put my hand in to make the seal more pliable and easier to install.

Here is what the valving looks like 10 over 12 both sides had 5 shims. Wouldn't mind hearing what everyone else's set up is and if its a go fast or trail rig.

I'll check the bleed holes tonight. Anyone have a phone number to offroad engineering the order won't go thru on my phone. Sent an email this morning but haven't heard back yet. Hopefully they are not closed for stupid covid shit.

Finally got a chance after work to look it over again. There are 3 bleed holes only one is open. There is also a really thick shim on the compression side of the stack furthest away from the piston. Got the helicoil installed just wating to here back about the shaft.

Buy a new shock! I have 2” Race runner shocks from these guys. It was an absolute bitch trying to get parts from these guys!! Accutune has one guy that will help you...seriously one guy. Since the original company was bought out, they don’t give a rats ass about supporting past shocks. Good luck, my experience was an eye opener on how not to do customer relations .
Literally no one else has parts for them.
