I'm trying to sell my 01 KX500 and a guy in California wants to buy it using Paypal.

How do I make sure I can't get scammed on the deal?

I would much prefer to do the deal face to face in person with cash or a certified bank check.

Would love to sell it locally, but covid has killed the local economy by crushing the oil industry.

Take the deposit with paypal. Tell him to sign up for Google pay. No fees no bullshit and when he sends it, it is like wiring the money. He cannot get it back.

I paid a guy with venmo for a bike, it worked out pretty good. But I met up with him in person and looked over it

Take a small deposit. Tell buyer he can pay in cash when he picks it up. GET CASH.

THIS. I've heard too many nightmare stories about people disputing the sale after receiving an item and immediately being refunded while the seller is out the $ with nothing but BS to follow in order to make things right -if it ever happens. I would not sell anything through paypal that I couldn't afford to give away. jmho

A friend bought a car using PayPal on ebay and when he went to pick it up it was a rusty couple of shit missing a lot of stuff from the pics in the auction. He disputed it and won since he used goods & services the protection did it's thing.

Yep, if you're selling it's best to insist on the friends and family AFTER they inspect it. They can't dispute it the same way if it's F&F, plus no fees.

I sold a Range Rover partially with PayPal several years ago.

The guy showed up with not enough cash intending to lowball me. I had picked him up at the bus stop and he planned on driving it home. I offered to drive him right back to the bus stop for the next morning's bus. Instead he offered the remainder on PayPal and I accepted that.

Dude disputed it minutes after leaving my house.

They automatically pulled the money back out, but then they gave it back to me after I scanned and sent them the bill of sale the guy signed stating partial payment sent on PayPal.

They stated that they refunded me because I had accurately described the item and that buyer protection doesn't cover vehicles.

does he want the bike shipped or is he picking it up?

if pickup, tell him you accept cash.
if shipping. use an escrow service and be very clear about who's paying to ship it back if he refuses delivery.

no fucking way I'd ever take paypal for anything more than a $100 item.

How much for the bike? :grinpimp:

$4k Come pick it up in person and I'll be happy.

It's a blast, just haven't had time to ride it with a toddler. Would rather have the money and not have the bike sit unloved.

Thanks, I would be shipping it. Guy is not a typical scammer. He speaks coherent English, but I don't like not having any real recourse if he tries to pull payment.

PayPal policy is designed to protect the money, which is the buyer, to maintain buyer confidence and security and ultimately get their commission from the sale. Protecting the seller does not make them money.

Paypal friends and family.

You don't pay a fee, and he can't contest it once the money is sent. It's totally secure.

Not a bad price, those 500 2 smokers are fetching good money these days. I really want to build a snow bike, and even though the internet all says to use a 4 stroke 450 or 500, i have a soft spot for 2 strokes :grinpimp:

If he's anywhere in norcal, I'm sure one of us would be willing to help facilitate the sale, say he gives me cash and I pay pal you with friends and family? Idk, just throwing it out there.

Timbersled makes a kit for it, but it costs more than the bike.

Guy is in Portola from advrider.

Bike is mint low hours and comes with a bunch of extras including a brand new sand paddle on a spare rim.

Ya, gotta pay to play. I really want an efi husky or ktm 300 2 stroke. So it's not like I'm looking at a cheap project. I wish I would have just jumped on the 2017 yzf450 with a timbersled kit on it for like $8500 last year. I've heard those newer Yamahas work well for a snow bike with the reversed head.

Portola is only about an hour away, and I'd be surprised if anyone was any closer. Let me know if you need help.

Whats wrong with an old fashioned wire transfer? Last time I did one at my bank it was like $25. Thats nothing on a $4k deal to not have to deal with the potential bullshit from paypal. Just because the buyer might not have any recourse with the friends and family option (though that's debatable) won't stop paypal from locking your money up for 180 days if their algorithms flag you as potentially shady.

Fuck Paypal.

That I know of.there's only one reason not to accept PayPal on a transaction of this size and that reason isn't PayPal.

It's the buyers source of the monies I.e. his credit card. He may not always be able to dispute it thru PayPal but - his cc company protects him for 180+ days and people can/do use that to F a seller over.

I've never had a transaction go south as a seller but PayPal will answer all your questions stat, so give em a call. An escalation lead (whatever their moniker is) may be needed to answer questions in some cases...

Well, Talked to the guy again and he upped his offer and I am just going to drive to Reno to meet him and get cash or a bank check.

It's only a 13 hour drive. Might see if I can fit the bike in the back of the wagon to save on fuel over taking the raptor.

Thanks for the help and input.

Just because this thread needs some pictures. I normally ride with a helmet, the wife took this picture after I unloaded it and was warming it up.

Good idea, although I'd never drive 13 hours to sell something.
Cash in person is the only way to sell things.

Well...... how'd this turn out?

Pending.

My wife hurt he back when I was an hour down the road and I had to turn around.

Attempt #2 will be tomorrow.
