Seeking advice: Things To Consider in Preparation for a Cross-Country Move

I started wearing a fedora and drinking decaf soy lattes with my pumpkin spice scone. lol!

I wish there were enough conservative voters to spread out like the locust liberals and move states rightward, but I fear we may have to fallback to a few states to escape them at some point.

However you move, Take pictures of everything that you move. Make sure your insurance covers everything. Trying to make a list and assign value to everything you own when you don't have it anymore, well lets just say it sucks

I took 7 truckloads to the dump, gave away all my furniture and most of my kitchen shit, and sold everything that was worth more than $100.

Then I bought 25 of these. The manager sold them to me for 8 bucks a piece for buying so many at once.

Got to where I was going, unpacked what I needed, built shelves in a storage container for what I don't need yet, and sold all the empty packers for 7 bucks each on marketplace in one day.

Painters tape and a sharpie to label contents. And be specific. "Clothes" doesn't tell you anything. You'll appreciate a label that says "Roger's hoodies and jackets" or "Susan's summer dresses" when you're looking for something specific.

I moved to NC from NY 4 years ago, Bought a enclosed trailer new and moved my stuff myself. It took 6 of so trips and the next to the last one was a problem. I had placed all my Milwaukee battery's in a tool box drawer. That was a mistake. If you move yourself, Make sure your insurance covers EVERYTHING including the trailer and tow vehicle

Fuuuck

Hey tuffluv

Why did you start a thread asking for advice if you're not going to check in and answer folks' questions?

Its been said a bunch of times, but purge a bunch of shit. The space your cheap walmart coffee table takes up isn't worth it. Sell/pitch it and buy a new one or buy someone elses cheap shit they're selling to move in the other direction:flipoff2:

I've worked on the yellow Penske moving trucks on the road when they break down. Seems like Penske takes care of their customers. Had one lady with a 26 foot truck and trailer towing her Jeep break down Saturday late afternoon due to diesel in the DEF tank, it wasn't her she had just picked it up and hadn't even refueled it yet. Penske got her a hotel room for the night and sent a truck and moving crew the next morning to transfer her belongings.

Another one the truck had derated west of Missoula and they towed it to Spokane and got there late Saturday. It was a bake the DPF code and I couldn't fix it and our dealer isn't open weekends. Penske sent another tow and towed it all the way to Seattle.

U haul on the other hand is not so good. I ended buying a 1988 26 foot U haul when I moved from N CA to N ID once I priced out one way rentals.
Nice you could fix the rig for the organisation, that saved them the price of a tow back to their outfit. HOWEVER...IMO regardless of the organisation in question the outfit should maintain the rigs well enough to avoid failures on long treks if they were rented for that... UHaul in my experience is notorious for long haul failures in my experience. In fact Ive had hassles in moving short distances like cross town with their rigs as well in 3 different states. Basically I'm not a fan of short haul rental organisations, preferring the "space in a trailer" approach myself.

Bruh. Do you even modern diesel? They all break down no matter how good you mantain them. Then on top of that these are vehicles rented to literally any dumb fuck with a drivers license. Its just the risk people take.

I moved from San Diego to Louisiana in '99. Had to reset my watch back 50 years.:flipoff2:
:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

I'm pretty sure I read on here that when moving you want to get two trailers, one for the stuff you're moving and one to go to the dump, when they're full, take them both to the dump. After moving short distance last year I'd agree.
I've read that before.

I threw out two 5gallon buckets of random nuts, bolts and scrap metal pieces when moved and I still kick myself 4yrs later for doing that! The only thing I regret tossing in the move:laughing:
I bought a 95 4Runner for the 22re swap for my old 1st gen and I took every zinc plated (why Arse hates Toyota's cause his shitty Ford's dont have that kind of quality) and non zinc bolt out of that fucker. That was 18 years ago and I moved my bolts in our recent move a month ago.

Fuck, how long did it take for you to notice it was on fire? I know battery fires arent shit to fuck with though...

Rented a 26ft Uhaul recently and it had a bad shake at 45 - 60. Got me there and back...

Rented the same one again for part 2. :homer:

[rural South Carolina accent]

"Yall can take yall's ass on back to Portlind. Or Sea Addle. Or wherever yall came from."

:flipoff2:

Whut in tarnation is a Subaru?…

Before moving you must learn the lyrics to Dixie, how to spit on Ohioans headed to Myrtle Beach, and forget everything about how to drive in inclement weather.

and forget everything about how to drive in inclement weather.
Absolutely this.

If you've ever driven in snow, forget everything you learned. Snow and ice turns the gas and brake pedals into on/off switches. Need to go? Stomp on the go button. Stop? Jam both feet on the stop button.

If it's kinda raining, do 10mph under the speed limit. Full Vietnam downpour with zero visibility... do 10mph over the speed limit and make sure your headlights are off.

And don't forget there's a property tax exemption if you maintain the left lane under the speed limit. Little known feature of the south.

Does the South even know what snow actually is?:flipoff2:

We get a little here once every 5 years or so, rarely lasts more than a couple days. I have a blast driving on it but I know how. In our defense there's usually alot of ice in it and it's not usually the dry powder/ snow only. Actually that's not enough of a defense... 70% of the people here are completely fucking retarded in any form of winter weather.

LOL. I worked with a guy from Florida in ND in the oilfields. It was 60 and we're all in shorts and t shirts walking into the shop for our shift and he's bundled up in multiple layers of sweat pants and shirts and complaining how cold it is. We're telling him just wait until winter.:lmao:

A passing car pointed to the trailer on RT95. I didn't see anything wrong in the mirrors but pulled over expecting a flat tire. As i ran down the passenger side i seen smoke coming out of the bottom of the trailer. When I opened the back door the fire already had the plywood liner on fire.
Unhooked the truck and just stood back.

Surprised your tears didn't put it out.:grinpimp:

It could have been worse, we just cleared the Baltimore tunnel 5 min before, and all the guns and ammo where on a earlier trip. No one got hurt so that's a plus
