What's new

Schwan man

Well that sucks. We had a little dude I liked years ago, and there was some random stuff my wife and kids liked. But it's been years since I've seen one of their trucks.

My childhood Schwan’s guy who was dubbed uncle Phil was murdered in a murder for hire deal carried out by his wife and stepson. Haven’t had Schwans since his last visit. The breakfast pizzas were my jam as a kid.

I just saw a Schwans truck a few days ago and thought man I didn’t realize they were still in business. Looks like they do commercial food distribution here.

Way cheaper to have the grocery store deliver. Their prices are crazy.

Was good shit through my childhood but it's a business model that's just outdated at this point.

I'm surprised they didn't just shift away from the home delivery route model to selling through grocery stores.

Don't know the ice cream. But the guy that runs a junkyard in Dunmore Pa. said the other week that he bought up all the Pa trucks. He has been getting them for years. Ford and Chevy's. I have one of the Rec Port 6.0 LC8's.

Would be funny to start using one as a service truck.

They used to deliver here, we never ordered anything. One time my SIL sent us an order I had to go meet them. I don't even remember what was in the order

I used them quite a bit, they were really big growing up. We used them pretty often I recal as a kid.

Recently I started using them again for various products, ran into a few issues:
  • Delivery driver times, they would show up at 2pm and leave a sorry I missed you. Well I'm at work 8-5 so yeah
  • Then you could place an app order and they would deliver but the driver times were still screwy
  • The they start remote delivery where they would drop off in insulated bags - that worked great

For about 2-3 years it was great, then they deiced to drop the local drivers and you order online and they would mail to you. Nope not interested so my use went to nothing.
I also didn't get the name change, waste of money and resources.

And it's stupid because they just did what everyone else did but behind the curve, they stopped trying to be something different.

Had some good stuff when I was a kid. Kept meaning to check it out as an adult when I’d see their truck, just never did.

Never understood why anyone would pay all that extra money to have the shittiest of frozen food delivered to them. Old/disabled people I can understand, but that's about it.

around here all their trucks were running on propane, kinda neat
doubt it was cheaper at all though

Weird. I had no idea they were still around.

Like milk delivery, the ice man, and paper boys on the corner.

Probably was when they converted everything but was never worth the cost to switch back. Had a step uncle that worked for them delivery to stores back in the 90s. Their trucks all ran off propane back then as well.

"Shwancho"

They chat up bored housewives and sell to them. I imagine the drivers got perks on top of their $13hr

There is plenty of worse frozen food at the grocery store. We were 20 miles from a store in town so it worked out for some items. I loved their pizzas as a kid.

Loaded trucks for them when I was in college. Learned the difference between a salesman and a delivery boy. The drivers at our depot made bank, of course min wage was $4.15/hr at the time. The building where I live now closed before Covid. Ate a lot of chicken fried steaks from Schwans back in the day.

Their trucks were neat because it was liquid injection and not vapor. I found one at the yard years ago but didn't have the cash to buy everything at the time.

There was an RV dealer in Delmont PA that was doing the truck conversions, passed them everyday for work.

Another interesting thing, at least when my buddy was working at a shop that worked on them... the trucks refrigeration was all 110or220, they were plugged in all night and defrosting all day
