How has your child's/ childrens' education been with the coron-virus school?
Subpar for many children, while the few who need additional help are pushed aside has been my experience thus far.

The kids that would do great in-class with any teacher will do well online

The kids who would struggle in-class with any teacher will struggle online

The rest, in the middle, will depend on how good of a teacher they have, how well their parents make sure they are online when they are supposed to be, etc.

Online sucks. There is no possible way to make it as engaging and meaningful as being there. Not exactly news.

Online schooling SUCKS. Our kids are going back after 9 weeks. I don’t want them wearing masks all day, but they need schooling. My oldest is failing science, miserably.

I understand that it isn't news and my son has no trouble with his work yet this "UNPRECEDENTED" virus should not be putting children out or heaven forbid, left behind. I can only surmise that you get what you put into school and the spoils....you know the rest. I will raise mine to be sure of themselves and confident but accept when they are wrong.

Trust me, I am not a teacher but I am quickly learning to be one. PTA meetings if they have them, are going to be something else. Could be private school time?

Was horrible for my second grader, when they made call at three weeks in that they were pushing back in class learn date that was enough, pulled him out and put him in private school.
i hate the religious aspect associated with the private school but ill look away for a bit if it means he goes to school for this year with a teacher in class and students.
he has made a giant turnaround compare to online. He fought the online like no other, now he gets up every morning with the focus that he wants to be the first kid at school.
with as shitty as this year has been with covid, getting laid off due to covid, and top it with divorce.... it wasnt easy to come up with the money to pay for the school but after just three days of him going i saw enough to know i would do whatever i needed to keep him there, at least for the rest of this school year.

Our kindergarten and 1st grades are back.

My youngest is in half day kindergarten. My oldest is in 4th grade and all online. Lucky for us, my wife has her masters in elementary education, so it's been a huge help. Not having the social interactions is tough on the kids.

Keeping the kids on task seems to be the hardest thing. There are so many distractions in the house. The oldest has 4 30 minute zoom meetings a day and there really isn't any time for personal interaction. This is where the wife comes in.

Motherfuckers need to take lessons from you. This is what being a good dad looks like.

I am on board with what you are saying as that is how I am feeling about my child's education- catholic background but no pressure to follow. But honestly how I have seen (online-google meet) students being excused solely due to not having their paperwork while they could have participated with a pad and pencil is beyond this father's mind.

There will be longstanding issues as a result of these kids doing online school for a year or more.

ABSOLUTELY!!

Its heartbreaking honestly to see first hand with so many kids.

I went to a Zoom meeting with the union people when they spoke in front of our board last week totally advocating for not opening up until safety can be "guaranteed".

I hadn't planned on speaking but I went on a verbal diarrhea rant after she spoke denouncing everything she said and everything she stands for. Told the board to find all new teachers if that is what it takes......our kids need to be in school!!

Thankfully my daughter goes to a private school and they were able to get a waiver to reopen. They have been back since the beginning of September. They are wearing masks most of the day and distancing and all that crap, but at least she is in the classroom with her friends and a teacher in person.

My kid (5 y/o) would've started kindergarten this year, schools here are online all the time. Private school next to the shop seems to be online almost entirely as well judging by the lack of traffic. My kid isn't one that would fare well staring at a computer screen all day so we've been homeschooling. It's been a struggle to say the least but I still feel like it's a better option

We can open on the 19th

We still have only about 55% returning as some parents don't want their kids to come back to online.

I got on the phone last weekend and talked to all my parents that were hesitant and got all of them to come back. Only one by a long shot. So glad to get my kiddos back in class, even for a limited schedule. I can do more in that 3 hours per day than 100 on zoom

I’m going back to college for mechanical engineering. Went into this semester with a 4.0. Struggling hard in a lot of “easy” classes because the professors dump PowerPoints with little context and expect us to figure it out. Calc II I’m killing it...it’s in person. I don’t have the time to teach myself statics, that’s why I’m in college. I work full time, go to school full time, have a wife and two kids to take care of, and I’m in the guard. Fuck COVID, I’m over it.

kids are in school, thankfully we have an awesome district administrator. It’s touchy week by week if the libs are going to finally over run him.

Don't need to get into details with my experience, as it's the same as many on here. It's an absolute cluster fuck, and this year will be an entire wash for my step kids.....

Getting them to do online work is like trying to push rope

My daughter in high school struggles with math. The end of last year sucked for her, she failed a few of her classes. This year she is back in the actual class room and doing ok. We send her to a private school. I work on a few school districts buses at their bus barns and pretty much all the school personnel I talk too say the online schooling has failed miserably. Quite a few of the school boards have made the decision to go back full time and more are following.

It's bullshit, my kids were doing really well before this scam.
Allegedly we're starting 2 days a week, in 2 weeks.
I heard 70% of the parents surveyed wanted normal schooling.
We're getting pretty pissed off.

Kiddo isn't in school yet, but was in daycare a couple times a week. Mainly just for exposure to get him around other kids. Hasn't been there since Spring. I bring him to the park almost everyday to get him to socialize with other kids there. He's a little weird. He'll pet them on the head and give them a hug. Trying to show him to say hello and stuff. He did awesome in daycare though. He points to pictures on the fridge, and says he made them in school, so he misses it too.

I am a career tech teacher in highschool. I hate this online crap. My program has required hours through the FAA. If students dont get the hours, they cant take their tests and dont get their certificates. Luckily last week we came back in person 4 days a week. It was like pulling teeth trying to get any of the students to interact while online. My freshman class is still online but they are not under any rules of the FAA. I havnt even met any of my freshman in person and again its really hard to get any interaction from them.

No school, mine are preK 3 days a week so i got no dog in this fight-

Im wondering what this is going to do long term? Take the most anti-social, disconnected, helicoptered and protected kids the world has ever seen and keep them home a school year away from most social interaction.

It seems like an instruction manual "How to Build Your Own Future Sociopath". Hopefully im way off, and kids being as resilient as they are, it'll barely be a blip on their radar later in life.

son is in K ... he is getting two 30min sessions 4 days a week, and just the am session on weds. My wife is doing her best to teach him, while trying to teach her students (middle school).

just like the income gap, the 'rona will have a drastic effect on the social gaps.

We've been "in-school" since this school year started in August. Families could opt for online only, we only have 7 students doing that. Our teachers have said that the majority of the 7 online kids are struggling. Mostly due to their parents not pushing them to get their assignments done.

Ours is the same. I think most of the kids that opted to do virtual, are back in person. I really thought after a few weeks something would happen, and they'd rush back to virtual, but so far so good, and doesn't look like its going to change, thankfully.

My oldest is a senior this year, so we are still waiting to see what happens with a lot of other things (basketball games, senior trip, etc). He is taking a couple classes at a local community college, and those are 100% virtual. Fingers crossed for sanity to prevail, and he can have a normal senior year.

Two of my cousins were homeschooled and one was shell-shocked when he went back to an actual school-that actually turned out to be a good person and the other went hog wild when he returned to public school. The one that went whole hog has had some setbacks, but he's still not right.
