Pretty soon I'm going to change the spare tire carrier on my trail rig dumpster and have a 37 standing up in the back making the rear view mirror completely useless. I just need a basic camera and a screen. No options, hell it doesn't even need to be wireless. It'll be wired on a switch not the reverse, so I can have it on whenever I want.

Grab the 1st one I see on Amazon? Anything to look for or avoid?

Put a pioneer backup camera in my wife’s 4 runner. It’s wired to a Pioneer DMH-2660NEX head unit. I’ve also used the cheap license plate mount type that came with a small screen.

The field of view is much better and the picture is clearer with the pioneer camera, but it requires a head unit that is capable of supporting it. The cheaper license plate mount camera worked ok, but the screen I had was pretty small, and kind of hard to see.

I’ve also seen a few that come with a replacement rearview mirror that houses the screen.

Edit: The pioneer head unit can support a forward facing camera also. Not that I’m adding that, but could be a handy option on a trail rig.

Following. I want to put one on my van. A new HU would be nice, but not a necessity

Forgot, that’s actually the second round of cameras I have done. I also installed one on a 2010 Chevy 2500. That camera was a Crux CUL-03. It was cheaper than the Pioneer unit, but worked well getting beat around for the two years it was on the truck. That one was wired to a pioneer head unit also.

Here is the one I use. It has a really big screen, if that doesn't work for you then pass on this one. Having said that, I like it a lot. I leave it on all the time so I can keep an eye on the rig behind me.

Yea that was actually the one I was looking at.

Don't want a HU type. I have a Kenwood with camera and GPS in my tow rig and really like it, but I just use the camera pointed at the ball for backing up on trailers. I was looking for something more quick and easy and not changing a HU or cutting so I can fit double din.

Gotcha. The smaller one I had was several years old. It had the license plate mount, and was wired to the monitor. Think it plugged into a USB port to charge. I’m sure the units and cameras are much better now.

I have a kenwood ddx-396 head unit with this camera. Works good and has a nice field of vision.

Ive got a Sony Xav headunit and use the supplied camera. It works really well even in low light. It comes on automatically in reverse or you can turn it on with the touchscreen. You can use your phone mapping app throught it as well.

Those or driving onto someone's hood

What the... have you been watching my friends wheel or something? Everyone laughs at the goofy hoop on my front bumper until it stops by buddy from sending his point ass mangled sheet metal through my radiator for the 3rd time that trip.

Subbed, I'm looking for something similar for the front of my trail rig so I can see what's on the other side of hills.

You carry a spare? Overachiever :flipoff2:

I let my buddy with the same bolt pattern handle that
Its street legal and gets driven alot... er, let's just say street legal in the south. Ill throw the wife and kids in and we'll go exploring up in Arkansas, and even though we're doing gay ass sight seeing trails and shit, I don't wanna be stranded with a freak ripped sidewall.

Also- I'm one of those people with like $4k wheel/tire combo on a $500 trail rig, so I wanna show off. :flipoff2:

What did you need to do to hook it up? The descriptions says 27' extension cable included and then below that,
  • extension cable required for most applications

Used the included 27' extension cable.

I put that on on my service truck. I haven't used it much yet, but so far so good. I rigged up a mount for it where the rearview mirror would usually reside because an actual rearview mirror wouldn't show me anything except the crane mast behind the cab...

It has what I'd assume is 27' of video cable for the camera but the trigger wire is short if I remember right. No biggy since the reverse lights are in the back so you just hook it up there.

If you want the camera to work anytime you want as well as the dvd player just ground the green wire on the stereo. That makes it think it's in park.

How were you ever able to track down any illegals with those sleuthing skills? It contradicts itself in the item description, that's why I asked someone that actually bought it.

Now that I think of it that way I bet it could be used as a forward facing camera so the extension wouldn't be necessary, but for rear use the extension cable would be required. They worded it fucktarded. :homer:

I'm using some cheap cameras from amazon (I can get the link later if you want) and a cheap screen. I think the cameras were about $12 each, and the screen might have been $15. I put a front camera too, to help parallel parking my F250.

Wired them on a 3 way toggle switch, didn't want to have the reverse turn on when I'm in reverse, since it's a manual transmission sometimes I let it roll backwards not in gear, and I wanted to still have the screen on. Flipping the switch up gives me the front camera, down gives me the rear, and middle is off.

Cameras have been going strong for over 3 years now.

I'm used to driving small jeeps, the F250 (2000) was a little intimidating when I needed to parallel park at first, the cameras really helped alot. I still use them pretty often. And occasionally to get 1" from someone's bumper at a traffic light when they do something dumb in front of me. Amazing how wide peoples eyes get when you get the grill of the truck filling their mirrors :lmao:

They don't really help TOO much when wheeling, but it does work nicely when you need to make a tight 3 or 17 point turn in a canyon or up against a tree or something and you want to get as close as you can up front or out back without smashing. Other than that, I haven't found them very useful for helping tire placement, the angle of view is just too wide to really get a sense of where the tires are.

Kenwood DDX6703X head unit. Dual camear (front and rear) capable. The screen has it's own backup lines you can change yourself and the camera has built in (read: cannot change) lines that can be turned off. The screen is great and for some random reason it's stopped working every time. Maybe it's wiring. Maybe its the camera. I'm very much considering the Pioneer camera at this point.

I wired mine two different ways. First was when the backup lights came on, then on the brake lights that turn on when I can control it. This was so I could check what is behind me driving down the road. Buddy said he did it for checking his bumper pull trailer if he hears something funny. I've never used it and I'll add that back up cameras make hooking up a trailer MUCH easier for a newb like me. I don't need anyone back there telling me left/right and I can get damn close on the first try without needing to get out and look. After not having it for a short while I feel like it's something else I check when backing up. mirror, mirror, camera, mirror, camera, mirror. It's easier than turning my head especially when I'm feeling old.
