I've gotten back into reading and it seems finding any horror books that truly frighten me has become wasted effort. Anybody got any suggestions for books that are genuinely scary?

Dean Koontz was able to scare me in a few books.
This.

Watchers was one of my favorite books of all time. All of his books are good, for the most part. Skip any co-authored ones, he's pretty much just adding his name to shitty books for the royalties any more.

Steven King's IT.

IT for me too. I read that in high school and would put the book outside of my room before I tried to sleep. Cujo done freaked me out bad too.

I never remember what name goes with his books, except for Door to December.

Whichever one where they were connected to the internet and their brains were taken over still gives me the creeps.

The creature that raped the woman at the rest stop bathrooms.

The OR cop that killed that Napa family.

These have all haunted me since reading them in my teens.

I looked up which on the Watchers was. 1987. I didn't know there was a movie too.

I did love his books always have a golden in them.

I don't know about books that are going to actually "scare" you but IT as mentioned is great. I have read it 4 times over the decades.

Other King novels that are good in his horror genre The Shining, Desperation, Salem's Lot, Pet Cemetery. Don't disregard just cause you have seen the movies.

In Cold Blood is creepy as fuck. True story of a murder is all I will give away. Great writing

I have read all of Stephen King's books over the years and most aren't "scary" as the rep he gets.

The Hot Zone is the scariest thing I’ve read. True and I knocked it out in 2 days.

Horror novels or shorts have never scared me. My favorite author though is probably Joe Hill for horror. King’s only good story is The Mist so at least his son has talent.

If you want BRUTAL: Jack Ketchum.

Fuck the movie. If you haven't read the book, stop what you're doing and get it now. If the first chapter doesn't get your heart racing, and I mean your heartbeat actually pulsing in your chest, I'll PayPal or venmo you the purchase price.

100% serious offer. To anybody here. It's that well written.

I wouldn’t call it scary per se but Blood Meridian by Cormac Mcarthy is pretty full on.
The OG Jaws book by Peter Benchley is worth the read also.
IT and the Shining as others have mentioned.

ever wonder that it is like to be Steven King and alone with his thoughts?
that guy is messed up

The Urge To Kill

I just simply couldn't finish it, prolly back in the mid or late 70's-

Read many of his books when I was a teenager, never had a desire to hang out with him. Not because of what he might be thinking, just not my crowd.

Ever had dreams that you would never try to explain or admit to another person? That beats a scary book ten fold. It’s like thinking to yourself “I know I am capable of protecting myself and my family if that’s what it takes, but I didn’t think that I would go that far”.

A good pull of Nyquil when you are just trying to get sleep will fuck your mind.

Are you referring to IT?

I couldn’t slog through that boring pile of word salad…I tried twice.

I’ve got some short stories I’ve written, and a novel I never fully edited if anyone wants to read them. Just left them in Word files and didn’t do anything with them.

I did read it, and iirc I bawled a lot while reading it.

I’m going to check that book out.
I've been petrified of clowns since I was 2ish years old. I've read the book twice and seen both movies.

King is a wordy motherfucker. I skipped some of shit and missed that one of the kids was black. I learned not to skip ahead in his books.

I was referring to The Watchers. I think King is someone you have to grow up reading. I started reading his stories at 30 but watched all the movies as a kid. I’ve given him many chances and just don’t like his writing.

I started King, Koontz and John Saul when I was 12.

I've tried King and haven't been impressed. Plus I'd rather not support that liberal.

I'll give watchers a go. I'm wrapping up the patient now.

I read I am Legend yesterday and dug it.

Love I am Legend.

I had seen the movie so stayed away from the book forever. That was a mistake. Book is really good compared to the movie. I need to reread that one actually.

I think I have read Watchers but I am going to get it again.
