From the Red Lightning Bolt of Detroit thread

I've gotten the red bitch running, but with a few extra dash lamps illuminated, so...I'm looking at buying a scanner to test before I buy anymore parts, plus I can use it on other crap later.

I'm looking at this one:

Any input?
Better options?

If i had to do it over id have bought autel

The reason we are saying autel over pingpong is updates and support. Autel is surprisingly helpful.

Instead of buying new, FBMP is full of Autel, Snap-on, Launch, etc. tools that are updated within 6 years and plenty capable for less than (sometimes much less than) $500 bucks. Plenty of people hard up for $, got a lowball offer on trade from the tool truck, or need meth:laughing:
Go get one with bi-directional capability.

Torque is what I use as gauges also.

If you own something less than 5yr old don't bother talking to me take that shit to a dealer.

I have a candoo hd. I only use it on semi trucks and busses. Does more than I need, Holds a charge forever.

I’m also looking for one. Even if you decide on autel, there’s too many choices for me.

Marketplace doesn’t have too many options that are closr enough to mess with.
I sell tons of Autels. I advise against buying one of FBMP because a lot of them are foreign units that don't work in the US which is why they are so cheap.

I have an MX808. It's a good unit for personal use. What are you looking to do with it?

I got an Xtool Anyscan A30M. Bluetooth dongle that plugs into your OBD2 port.

Cheapest well regarded unit that does quite a few bi-directional functions.

Hasn't let me down yet on GM, Nissan, Dodge.

Use your own tablet or phone for screen and save some cash.

Supposed to be lifetime updates, and Xtool seems good about keeping things current/supported.

$170 AMAZON

Part of the problem is that I don’t have a clear set of what I need to do. I feel like I’ve been spent quite a bit buying individual scanners and adapters to troubleshoot systems on the bmw, Prius, the Dodge ram or my sprinter. All of it seems like it’s only specific to the one vehicle.

I needed one to troubleshoot the ABS and do things like calibrate, the turbo charger actuator on the 2011 Dodge.

Have another scanner, which I think was an autel to t/s the sprinter. Nice machine, but it’s quite limited to just supporting the sprinter beyond anything beyond basic OBD2.

Now we have a 2015 Tahoe and need to find another device to troubleshoot fuel injectors, as well as calibrate things like ride height, and troubleshoot suspension.

I'm just trying to get a 2011 jeep wrangler 3.8 to run reliably. CEL plus red lightning bolt 🌩 is making it either not run or run like shit. Limping around at 28mph sucks ducks.

Not that it was the smartest idea, but I bought a used one from my snap-on guy. I don’t use it that much, and had never really used one much, but it is pretty great at what I have used it for. I could have saved a couple of hundred buying from fbmp, but I like my truck guy.

Found an MP808 for about the same price ($280) as the MX808 on eBay this morning. Its on the way.

I bought the MX900 for $485 from a guy that Halogrinder introduced me to when I was diagnosing issues with my 328d.

I'm still trying to learn everything it does.

Autel makes a huge number of scanners. The website wont provide any model comparison to know what each one does. Is there another source to see what is the right model for what I need?

I did find that Temu is reselling Autel scanners. Sure to not be knockoffs, right? :lmao:

I have the Autel MP808, its a great unit. If your vehicle has a specific scan tool out there thats also good to have. We have mostly Chrysler and VAG vehicles so I have AlfaOBD and VAGCOM which are both more capable than the MP808 is.

I bought the Kingbolen, easy to learn, easy to use. So far I've eliminated the CEL lamp amd when the red lightning bolt does come on, it is easily cleared by simply turning key off and back on, even if that's inconvenient.
Plus, I have a guy who wants to try it and maybe buy it for what I paid($300) after i used a coupon. He runs a come to you auto repair service and wants a better scan tool than he currently uses(stolen from Oreillys).
We think there's a damaged wire somewhere causing my issue...

Way back when Radio Shack was still a thriving business and we were all collectively on that teetering point of transition from analog to digital, I had a Radio Shack CueCat scanner.

It was a novelty really, but you could open your Radio Shack catalog, scan the barcode in the catalog with the CueCat, and your computer browser would open the Radio Shack product page for whatever you had just scanned.

They're cheap on eBay, scan anything you want with one, works best with barcodes though.

Easier just to say the product name near your phone or laptop and it will be instantly in every feed you look at. :flipoff2:
