This issue is not really about the guns or cops, it is about 'pay to play', how wealthy individuals are granted more rights than average citizens, and elected officials taking cash in exchange for granting privelages.
I used to live in this county and after the most recent election of Sheriff Laurie Smith, news got out about several large campaign donations to her re-election campaign, one company 'donated' roughly 100 grand (not a lot of money compared to presidential bid, but a lot for a county sheriff). These donations were made by private security firms. Recent findings prove what those donations were really for.
Just to set the scene, Santa Clara County is where silicon valley is, home to numerous large tech companies. These private security firms provide protection for big wig tech execs. SCC is very liberal and obtaining a CCW (concealed weapon) permit is next to impossible for average citizens in SCC. It is a lengthy application process that involves face to face meeting with the Sheriff, hands on weapons handling test, etc.
However, these campaign donors were magically granted CCW permits. 80% of permits issued were to those campaign donors. Of the people who were denied permits, 94% were non-donors. Hmmmm....
