I have some overhead/laying on my back welding to do… I’ve researched these before when someone posted them but I find a lot of cheapies. My eyes are worth more than $30-50

Are there any good BRAND NAME units?

This shit has been covered a million times. Tons of video comparisons on youtube of people measuring the spectrum that comes through. Even the cheapest most garbage lenses will block 100% of UV. What you pay more for is not blocking the rest of the light too, durability, fancy electronics in your auto dark, etc, etc.

On auto dark helmets the better ones come with more sensors on them. Cheap ones only have maybe a couple and if something’s blocking it, oh say like a roll bar tube while trying to weld another joint deeper in the chassis, you’ll get blinded. The speed of darkening is also an issue on cheap helmets.

I only owned one cheap one as my first one, never again.

No idea on OPs helmet search as I’ve never used one like that. When I welded for a living, I just wore a dew rag on my head under my helmet and it helped keep sparks off my scalp. I did a fair amount of overhead welding but nothing like pipeline or structural type welders do.

Optrel weldcap is my goto.

I just received a sand people mask as a gift from a friend. Cheap unit (like the pictured one), but perfect for the welding kit in the truck.

I've had trouble in the past fitting my dome into places needed for welding cages inside full body trucks. That's where a weld cap or sandpeople mask would shine.

Basic plain ol Jackson with a big window, number 10 and send it

I do put earplugs in for the sketchy stuff, I had a spark go in my ear once, I have no idea what happened in there but it was like instant nausea. one star, would not recommend

Yep I have 2 Optrel and only helmet I'll consider now, the new clearview lens is fantastic. The weld cap would be similar to the OP picture. My new one is the Panoramic CLT I think.

Earplugs. All the time. Thats how I was raised. Safety glasses and earplugs anytime I was working on shit that was loud or could get shit in my eyes. Started when I was building ramps as a kid. Dad worked at a refinery so safety was a priority to them. Never had shit burn my ear canal. Never got flash burn/sandy feeling. Had a few things in my eye but thankfully got it out or it came out quickly. I don’t think I could handle watching the doctor getting stuff outta my eye

:knock on wood: 😄

took me exactly one ER visit to learn

Unless youre getting something whacky like the esab sentinal, welding lens come in 2 standard sizes. Buy the helmet, then spend the money you want on fancy lenses.
