A task force recommended Feinstein's name be taken off the list of 44 schools set to be renamed, a recommendation the board ultimately ignored. Critics have said the school should be renamed because of Feinstein's decision to replace a Confederate flag that was vandalized in front of city hall during her time as mayor there, the Chronicle reported.

Renaming the schools could cost as much as $1 million, the newspaper estimated.

well, i'm glad they preserved her place in history despite such a heinous act!

Among the schools set to have their names changed are Lowell High, Lincoln High, Washington High, Roosevelt Middle, John Muir Elementary and Feinstein Elementary School, according to local media reports.

London Breed, the city's African American mayor, has previously voiced opposition to renaming the schools, saying the board should instead focus on reopening their buildings to students and dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.

"It's offensive to me as someone who went to our public schools, who loves our public schools, and who knows how those years in the classroom are what lifted me out of poverty and into college," Breed said last fall. "It's offensive to our kids who are staring at screens day after day instead of learning and growing with their classmates and friends.

John Muir was a pretty well known racist. Maybe not so much for the time, but by todays standards for sure.

which is interesting right? If he wasn't a racist for his time, then was he a racist at all? kind of curious.

if John Muir were alive today would he not be more like Noam Chomsky? If Chomsky were alive with Muir, would he not also be decried as a racist today?

edit: point being, race wasn't much of a concern for either of them.

They're so far out on the fringe of PC insanity, that London Breed is the moderate / centrist / voice of reason / adult :laughing:

Lucky for her she wasn't born a white male, or she'd be viciously attacked right now as a racist hatemonger :rolleyes:

I'm no fan of the Sierra Club as you might expect, but apparently he made disparaging remarks about Blacks and Indians. Sins of the father and all that. Even if my ancestors had been slave owners, I don't think I'd feel guilty unless I was some silver spoon trust fund baby that was funded by slave labor.

I don't know if you kept up on the sierra club releases last year, but they were fairly comical in their hypocrisy, as most of the race critical stuff is.

I am 100% against sins of the father stuff. but of course, that is no longer acceptable because it is too individualistic and doesn't place full blame on today's actions for heritage :rasta:

In today's world if you're white you are or will be racist. Did ya miss Susan Rice yesterday..... yep all whites are now Racist ..... again.

It'll be a long 4 years of White Man Bad!!!

That is the problem. They keep using todays standard of morality to judge the past. It's not an honest way to look at anything without the context of the time.
