So, looks like I may be spending a lot of time there, with my daughter looking at colleges.

Who's near by?

May be calling on Irate Aunts and Uncles.
 
I used to damned near live there parked in the kettle chips lot waiting to unload or on the street sleeping after unloading because those dickheads had run out my book waiting to unload. Looks like the school isn't far away from the chip plant, if the wind shifts juuuuust right I bet she can smell the frying spuds instead of the stench of piss and shit from the local bum camps. :laughing:


There are a lot of locals if something comes up. I'm 4 hours away, but if shit goes really south I'm always down for a road trip.

What's the town there like? I am hoping she picks another school. She got into every place she applied to and so far, without a visit, this is her top choice. Last on my list, by far.

People are fine, it's between portland and eugene which are the most libtarded cities in the state by far. Nice enough people over all but their politics are fucked.

As an example of their thinking the kettle chip plant borders a nature preserve right in the middle of town and canadian geese roam free range. If they waddle across the road you'd better stop, if you hit one and it dies and someone sees you and you don't report it you're properly fucked. They're protected as a local species... Canadian geese. :homer:
 
Well, look for Lancaster and State street. It’s just north of the college. Locals call that area Felony Flats.

Salem is funny, since it’s the state capital there are definitely affluent areas. West Salem (west side of the river) is one of them.

On the outskirts of Salem you will find lots of rural agricultural land with grass, tree, vegetable farms everywhere. This gives way to the high Hispanic presence in the area.

Definitely lots of bum camps with roamers on the main drags. All along the river, under the highway overpasses, and in the abandoned land locked property’s next to main drags.

Wait a federal migratory waterfowl is protected as a local species? As in they are saying that before man kind the geese used to end their migration in Central and Northern Oregon? I was under the impression that the only real reason migratory waterfowl stop short of the southern migration grounds was to hang out in the warm ponds and plowed fields set up by man? Otherwise its just a rest for a refuel and back to the air in a day or 3.

Am I wrong?

Your not wrong. We have them here... and being a mild winter this year, those little honking fawks set up shop in our neighborhood lake and in the 60 acre meadow across from us. They migrate to the little lake, then to the field. Lazy a-holes. Shit on everything in between... At night, I hear the tell tale muffled blast of a shotgun on occasion. :homer: I say good riddance.

As for Grendel's Q, I have only passed through a handful of times... typical liberal town even 12 years ago. Last time I was there. Awesome area though, if it weren't for the attitude. The atmosphere reminded me of Eugene, Seattle, Portland, and etc... where else did she get accepted?

She got into the top 5 schools in the country... but wants to attend a Christian University and major in Film/Anime.

Seems like this is the only place to do that.

So I paid like 6 deposits for room/board/tuition to keep those spots.

And hope to hell that she hates this one and goes to a closer school.

Years ago I worked with a guy who claimed that after he got back from Vietnam he used to sneak out onto the golf courses in Denver and trap ducks and geese to feed his family!
Now back to the discussion :flipoff2:

Funny, i know one that would string fishing line between the trees across the field of the neighboring state park with tons of hooks hanging off of it with corn. He would be out there at daylight clubbing hooked turkeys to death and then take down his line before anyone else got there.

Many would be quite surprised with the amount of conservatives that are in the PNW. They are everywhere surrounding the bigger city’s.

Yip... I had a small Cabin up on Lake Osoyoos in the late 90's. Great place, All the conservative places seem to be a bit more inland in Wa. like Yakima, Wenatchee, Spokane... even North of Seatac was pretty decent.

Oregon area's like Bend, and such aren't to bad... again, a bit more inland. California is the same way... The Sierras have a very conservative rep, as do many of the upper valley areas. For whatever reasons the coast get's fawked every time.
 
I got into the school of my choice. My parents said no. They weren’t paying. So I did something else (school work and no debt) and am successful anyway.

A career in a lucrative field pays for a nice hobby and doing things for work tends to destroy people's passion for them anyway.

I went to college at Wm & Mary in Williamsburg, we used to fish all the time and we'd come home with 5 gallon buckets of fish and have big fish frys for whoever was interested. Most of our neighbors were not students and man, we'd fry the fish, some potatoes etc and everyone would come out and chow down. One of our neighbors, surprised us once with a bunch of ducks and another time with a big ass goose... which we cooked and shared..

I asked him where he got them (no shot in the birds, no wound) and he said, 'come out with me sunday morning' and so I did and armed with some brown paper bags we went down to a hotel on the bypass near town the 1776... they have grounds and a pond... next thing I know, Ronny is crawling around putting out the bags and bread crumbs... and here come the ducks. they go right in the bag and he reaches in and breaks their necks...

I did explain how illegal it was. But, he looked at me like I was out of my mind. Pretty funny though. I love duck....


As for Salem. It is a nice town and pretty safe. I wouldn't worry too much about her being there.

Have her check out Drury University in Springfield, MO. It's a private Christian school and has Film and Animation majors. I was happy with my classes and prices of them when I went there several years back.

i used to spend a lot of time in the early 90s hanging out in Eugene, fun fun times as a single man. But as a father of some daughters I would say try like hell to keep her closer to home.

eh doesn't matter where she get's a film degree from so all the schools are about the same and being 6 hour drive away or being a 6 hour flight away is pretty much the same thing, far enough away to be autonomous.

at least in Oregon you won't have to worry about the typical pot/alcohol party stuff at colleges that goes on with the occasional mix of harder drugs to watch out for. now that everything is legal decent quality coke acid and clean heroin should be easy enough to find :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
