We are currently working on converting a creepy concrete storage room into a vault.
Stopped by Pella Safe Company and we're reading to put in our order for a custom vault door, just have to finish up a few things with the concrete guy.

I'm trying to decide on DIY shelving/racking to display and store long guns, handguns and ammo. Pinterest gives a lot of options as far as tacticool, modular racking but looking for ideas from the group as to what you've seen or have that works well.

Ammo is stupid heavy, if you’ve got a lot of it I’d try to find a section of actual pallet racking if you have the space.

I’ve installed several sets of the gun mounting holders in hidden areas, etc, but most of them are crazy expensive. I’d look for some brackets designed for garden tools if that will work and then use their mounting tracks.

Do you think you’ll be able to keep the humidity down enough?

In my storage area I put up slat wall. You can use it for hooks shelving or all kinds of different hangers.

They sell it in 4'x8' sheets.

For ammo I use the heavy duty wire shelving units. Bulk or surplus ammo sits on the floor, because it's heavy.

Custom vault door? Just buy it at Lowe’s. It will be cheaper

When we realized my Liberty age wasn’t going to fit in my gun safe “cubby” we decided to build it into a fun safe room while the Liberty safe made its home in the garage. We used a solid wood door with a mirror covering it up set up on a magnetic keypad. Upon entering, to the lower left are cubbies for random shit and above that metal hangers to hang riffles. Forward and to the right is high shelving to mount all the long guns. Third highest shelf is for storing random shit. It’s not the best, but in a pinch I had to build it out as is. It works for what it is but definitely coulda built it better with more time and planning.

To add, I really liked the cubby idea we built out to store random shit. Works to keep things organized but also to just throw shit in there without worrying.

I use wall control panels. Combo of slot and hooks, looks good and you can get it from cheap peg board for a good deal.

For hooks I use the heavier duty 1/4 ones, but dip them in plastidip so it's not metal on metal

Currently have x2 old Army file cabinets that work awesome for ammo storage. I have it organized drawer x drawer for pistol/rifle/shotgun for the majority of our boxed ammo. The cases and cans will definitely need something sturdy, like pallet racking - that's a good idea.

We're able to run HVAC in there and will add a dehumidifier to be safe.

I had never thought about looking there. Looks like a 1/3 of the cost - the reviews from Home Depot (none from Lowe's) are mostly good until you get to the review on the lock/safe pad, which makes me concerned. I'll have to do some digging on this and see if that can be replaced with something different. Thanks for the tip!

pretty much any digital pad can be replaced upgraded to a better digital or to a dial. id call a real deal safe expert and locksmith because those guys know their shit.

im pretty sure the company you are ordering the door from will tell you it cant be done so you'll buy their super expensive vault door.

I bought a FortKnox safe that had a digital pad. I didn't like it. Seemed like cheap plastic and I didn't like batteries. Had my local locksmith install a dial . It is heavyduty brass and no batteries to ware out.
