What's new

Rock hounds, polishers, lapidary types. Step on in.

I'm not a proper rockhound, just a casual interest, picking up interesting rocks. I have a couple fossils, native copper, obsidian.

Copper can form interesting veins in volcanic flows. I picked this up in U.P. Michigan which is a copper mining hot spot. I don't recall exactly as I was a young kid, but I think it was in a stream bed.

Following. Ive been picking up small "pocket" rocks for the last 30 years. Have often thought about getting a tumbler. Looking for recommendations for a reliable one that isnt too expensive, in case I lose interest.

There are 4 stages. The first stage (course grit) takes 1 week or more, depending on the imperfections your trying to lose. Stage 2 (medium grit) takes 1 full week to lose the couse grit scratches. Stage 3 (pre polish about a 500 grit) 1 full week to lose the medium grit scratches. Stage 4 (polish 8000 grit or so) takes 1 full week. So one or more months for one batch.
Good thing we have a nuke plant here and electricity is cheap. If we lived in Avocado land, that shit would not fly.

I've been running 2 of these HF tumblers nonstop since I opened the box. Not much to them. You could build your own easily. Rubber drums can be bought from

GeoShops.com, LLC - Retailer and Publisher for Rocks, Minerals and Gems

Or

Rocks, Gemstones, Minerals, Rock Tumblers, Lapidary Equipment, and Educational Supplies For Sale - The Rock Shed

What I have.

I like that its a dual, but Harbor Freight seems to be out of stock

I love the area I live in. Lots of neat rocks. I found some Obsidian this weekend in fact.

I haven't been into rocks since I was a kiddo, kinda getting back into it as I get out exploring more.

Wife and I have kinda gotten into rockhounding. Theres quite a bit of agate around eastern AZ and western NM. Have found some cool stuff.

Picked up my first tumbler about 6 weeks ago. My first batch kinda sucks. Never did get shiny. I'm gonna run em again with 8000 AO grit. I didnt realize there's such an art to it.

Since then I've bought 4 more. Latest is a Rebel 17 for the big rocks. I grabbed the new Harbor Freight one too, when they finally got it back in stock.

Ive got 4 different stages going now. Next ones up for polish are what we found in Reserve NM and Blue AZ.

It's addictive isn't it. I've dedicated part of my shop to it for no apparent reason. Now I have a drawer of shinny rocks I don't know what to do with.
