Way out West.
Mark Mathews has passed. His work on the mapping of Johnson Valley trails and later U4 race maps and course marking was legendary.

You will be missed.

That is some sadness I did not need. Mark was one of the best and his overwhelming contributions to the off road world can not be overstated. Rest in Peace my friend, you will be sorely missed by anyone who met you.

He's not been well for a while, his son said he passed peacefully in his sleep.

It made me sad too, totally unassuming, and his knowledge of Johnson Valley and Cartography was top notch.

as Surveyboy mentioned somewhere else, he is probably more responsible for KOH than anyone else. he always wanted to be the first one there and last to leave. he just enjoyed being in the dezert.

My fondest memory was KOH circa 2010. My security team was growing with hard charging mall cops. Mark, Jeff Knoll and crew were sending Chinese lanterns way up in the sky. There weren’t many people out there yet so it was easy to see where they were lifting off from. My night shift supervisor busted into their camp and almost had Mark in cuffs. It was funny at the time and just as funny now when I think about it?

Rest well Mark! Meet up with Krusty, Shawn Wilson, Pistol Pete, Jessi, Rosco, Tbars Ted, Eddie Peterson and all the others who have left an impression and left this earth!
