Were these always easy to find, or should I buy one while I can? I remember trying to find one a few years ago and couldn't. I don't "need" it and don't want to drop $800 on it right now unless it could be hard to get in the future.

That price isn't good. I think I paid 575 for mine. I just picked up a 1301 tactical at scheels and they had a wall full of rem 700s.
