My 9yr old has asked for a PC to play fortnite on for his 10th bday. I don't want to break the bank...he's 9. Is there a mildly decent PC that comes with a monitor and everything? I'd like to ne able to have him learn some other computer skills with this machine too.

Micro Center special...

with this requirement I think you would have to do an in-depth search for a machine that wouldn't work.

Gaming laptop?

Then he can transport it easily

My gaming laptop was twice the cost of what a PC with similar power would be, and it's heavy as fuck. and no where near what I would call a budget machine, and it will likely be outdated by the time he's in high school.

costco has some around that mark. I am in around 1200 for my kids computer I built myself

I am a cheep bastard..... Find out what the performance requirements for the games that he plays. I have run Doom on a really old crappy PC, and I was happy with it, but I am not into the playing computer games any more.

I was going to recommend Tiger Direct for a refurb (They just went out of business). You can always tweek it with fancy LED fans, Memory and SSD's. Put a clear plastic port hole on the side for shits and giggles. If you have an old case; build one with the kid (new guts).
But IMHO; Get you kid started in coding... A Raspberry Pi and Arduino would be a be a lot of fun. ( You still need the PC.) :stirthepot::stirthepot::stirthepot:

We got out 9 year old a nintendo switch. Pretty sure they have fortnite for that. Comes with a dock to hook to the TV if desired. I agree with motorcharge. And to xr-nuts point, you can set time limits and shit

Newegg parts list

Build yourself for $750 ish? Leaves some budget for a decent monitor in 1440p under the 1k mark.

Shop around as today is prime day and you’ll probably find the best deals on parts scattered across the net.

+1 on IBUYPOWER

just don't do there watercooled cpu

looks like you're looking at $900 for there bottom tier with mouse and keyboard included, would need a monitor and headset

newegg is also good for shopping PC stuff, im not sure i would buy a built pc off of there tho

edit: the bottom tier is better than my current PC

Newegg got bought out by the Chinese and went to shit like 7 or 8 years ago. They also turned it into a marketplace site like Walmart so theres a lot of scammy Chinese third party vendors selling on the now as well.

single biggest regret I have with my youngest was allowing video games in the house. ymmv

Get him a console, don't let your kid game online on PC at 9.

He already has my old ps4, a switch and a wii. I ran home for lunch and he was in the driveway riding his bike he learned to change the innertube on this weekend. In the evenings he and his friends from soccer and basketball get together and play games online.

Games and internet aren't the problem, regulation of them by the parents is.

:lmao: seriously. you just called me a bad parent?

when it started with a ps(?) it was 2 hours a week. but I couldnt stand over him 24/7. he's a married adult now, has a job and pays his own way, so I mustve done something ok with him. still games though. maybe Im just old and grouchy and dislike gamer nerds. :shaking:

Unless you're going to sit there with him he's still going to be exposed to all kinds of shit a 9 year old shouldn't be.

PS5 is cheaper, better parental controls, and I believe Fortnight is cross platform, he should still be able to play with his friends.

I've been gaming online on PC for the better part of 30 years. There's no way I'd let my kids do it today at that young an age.

another thread? what the hell to lazy to read the other one and post there?

20% off ends today.

I never said you were a bad parent, nor would I. I do not know you or the decisions you made. I simply said the object is not the problem.

I own a ps5 already. All his gaming is done in earshot of one of the two of us and we strictly regulate his circle of friends he plays with. I've been gaming myself since the og grey gunned NES. Before the gold Zelda.

Check out some of hte SteamPunk PC cases.... They are fucking sharp! Just Google it... :smokin::smokin::smokin::smokin:

I hadn't considered that. Would be cool to play halo again.

They make the absolute worst prebuilt gaming desktops out there. They also use a bunch of proprietary parts that you can't upgrade or reuse so the entire system is junk if certain parts die or age out of use.

Edit: They do make really good monitors though.

You're pretty smart for a woman.

Similar build to last week's thread. $600 for just the PC, with enough additional PSU capacity for future upgrades. Should be able to get a decent monitor, peripherals, and Wincoze key, for under $400.

They're fun to build.
