Is it just me, or have these doubled in price the last 2-3 years:confused:

Used to be able to get a set of 4 1"x15' decently heavy ones for $30. Now it seems like 2 comparable ones are $50.

So since I'm shelling out, what are the best ones? My flatdeck will (finally) be installed on my f350 this spring, and I'll need a good stash of good straps.

I've been wondering the same thing myself the last couple months. I'm down to the last 2 of my "Goodyear" branded 1.25" ratchet straps from Sam's Club that I've had for almost 20 years (weekly use in three trucks now). They've outlasted any other straps I've gotten since that were rated for less that 6k lbs. For bigger straps it's usually worthwhile to go to TSC, but they carry same cheap smaller straps HF has.

I'll check out the Huskys next time I have to force myself into the big box hardware stores...

I just got a set of these 2" straps with chain ends in yesterday. My trailer has stake pockets and the regular hooks on 2" ratchet straps don't fit through the pockets to do the wrap around thing. I also always worry about them getting cut on the edge of the trailer when I have a something that's pushing their capacity or something that's swaying/moving a bit.

This ebay seller was the cheapest could find. I'd been wanting a set for a while and all the strapping down I had to do while moving over the past couple weeks pushed me to finally order them.

I've been using these on the ratchet side for years:

Except I went cheap and bought 10 of these for like $20, along with a 30' HF chain and a few extra HF hooks.

Bonus with those adapters is that you can hook up to longer pieces of chain or put it in the middle of a chain and make a sort of bridle.

I've also been using a bunch of the really cheap 1" ones that I bought to strap shit in the ABF truck I used the last time I moved...around 8 years ago. These were the norther tool 10 for $8 kind and I forgot how absolutely shitting they were. I've probably thrown half of them away in the last week. I really do need to pick up a handful of decent ones so I don't have to break out the 2" one for small loads.

I buy pretty much all my 1" straps at Home Depot and Harbor Freight and my 2" straps at Harbor Freight and Walmart.

How ghetto would it be to weld some 1/2" D-rings to some extra heavy wall pipe in order to convert the ratchet end of the 4" flat hook straps to something that doesn't need a trailer rub rail to grab onto?

Not that any of my vehicles that could haul something worthy of a 4" strap are in running and driving condition. I just like to be prepared.

I hate all cheap straps and their craptastic ratchets. I tried some mil-surplus and found a few good ones but the majority seem to be junk (have a feeling that is why they are surplus now). Found some documentation that one of the suppliers tried to rebrand overseas versions and they not only violated the contract but didn't meet t specs either.

So my last ones I got from Mac and they are excellent. The rest of mine will be from them as well.

Look on Amazon for 1" wide 1000# WLL/3000# Break straps, they have several for $20ish for a set of 4 10' straps, Lowes used to have them for $35-40ish for 4 15ish foot straps as did Walmart, but I dont see either on their websites now.
I dont buy anything lighter, just not worth it as the ratchets bend and jam too easily.

I like SMART STRAPS brand straps. I used to get them at Walmart, then they quit stocking them. I get them at Tractor Supply now.

They have better, stronger ratchets and 1000 lb straps instead of the cheaper 500 lb.

4- 14' straps are typically $40, but they go on sale often.

I think Lowes has them too

dang, their price for casters is pretty good! Wonder what their quality is like?

OOH shit, nevermind, their shipping cost is insane!! 4 casters, 12 ratchet straps.... cheapest shipping is $85.

I have easily bought 100 casters from them over the years, probably closer to 200. I have been happy with all of them, they are mostly over runs or more likely takeoffs. In my experience shipping runs higher than expected but when the dust settles they cost far less than ordering similar casters from McMaster or Caster Warehouse.

I also buy a several dozen ratchet straps per year. McMaster or New Haven both have top quality straps. 99 percent of the ratchet strap failures I see are due to them being run over or sharp edges.

Mac's Custom Tiedowns. Top Quality. USA made. Jeep/4WD focused company. They're at EJS every year and I have a bunch of their stuff. Mix & match length, colors, hook styles, E-track, etc.

What did your order of 100 casters cost to ship from them? $300 in shipping? I've received a 150lb transmission for less than 1/2 that in shipping. I'd prefer shipping costs to be realistic and honest, not compensating for "cheaper" prices. I'll pass.

I don't wear out ratchet straps often. around sharp corners, just use some old radiator hoses cut down the middle, makes a great edge softener and a use for something that would otherwise be thrown out.

Small ones I just buy from the parts store or Harbor Freight as needed. I keep a couple 2" U.S. Cargo Control branded in my pickup too, those were a freebie but I'd pay for more if I needed them, 15 bucks a pop though.

Yea the shipping sucks. One day I'd like to stop by their showroom. I still find some good deals there even with the shipping, mostly hydraulic parts and for a while diesel engines. Stuff that shipped freight was reasonable.

where are they located? If their prices are the same for local pickup, that would be fantastic for someone near by. Maybe even an opportunity for an irate to start shipping, from someone who lives near there to ship out items for other irates. :usa:

I bought a new set (4) of the goodyears from Sams last year for $20 or $30. I dont think you can beat em especially for the price.

Best? Probably Kinedyne IMO. Not cheap though and overkill for occasional use.

For my personal stuff I run mostly Erickson, with a handful of motomaster and noname ones thrown into the mix.

Keep an eye on Princess Auto and crappy tire - both put em on sale fairly regularly.

I bought some self contained/retractable 1" husky straps from the depot to bolt to my ladder racks. They've been outside for a year now and are still working like brand new. They were a bitch to drill through so I'm guessing some kind of stainless. I figured they'd be good for my racks and gimmicky for everything else but I like them enough to grab some more when the time comes. They're a little short but probably fine for most pickup things

Might have to grab some of those for the stern tiedowns on the boat. The retractable ones are a lot easier to deal with for that task

the 4" wide straps that you see on semis are only like $13 apiece, you do need to buy the ratchets separate but you can't lose them if they're welded to your trailer/truck. Only know they're that cheap because I found a bunch of them all along the freeway. Someone musta left their strap box open or something.

General use, when I absolutely can't use chains (I usually do anyways) but aren't those 2" wide ones with the folded wire hooks like $10 apiece? Got some of those that get used infrequently.

The bent plate ended ones are dirt cheap. The better triangle/chain/grab hook are more than double the money.

I bought about 20 weld on lashing winches (like transport trailers have) from Princess Auto last year for $15 apiece, but haven't bought too many straps yet.

bend up a triangular d-ring outta 1/2 or 5/8 rod with a section of chain on it and tack weld it into the flat hook

That's basically the plan for the strap end. I'm gonna bolt something in the ratchet end.

I second these being good quality. I've had a set with chain ends for 10+ years.

Not cheap though.

oh I was talking about strap winch type straps
got a fuckload of them but no ratchets or winches

anyone got a source for cheap 4" wide ratchets?
