We got 5 ducks, and recently a rat has found its way under the coop. Doesnt bother the ducks, but digs a lot of holes. We have poision out where only it can get it, starting to remove food and water at night. It doesnt go near any trap I set out..

Coop is pretty predator proof, hard cloth going under ground etc, but it just digs under it.

Whats the best way to get rid of this rat?

Pics of ducks for attention.

Put the traps in their runs.

They know the territory and will be wary of new things like traps that you have placed. After a while, the traps become common place and will work effectively.

Cool ducks. :)

Poison will work fine, just be patient. At first he'll go stash everything, but eventually he'll eat it and die, normally within a week or two.

This is what I use; has never failed to 100% stop an infestation, even with my wife constantly putting out birdseed:

I had a mix of ducks and chickens. The chickens would kill the mice and pick them clean.
Ducks... them beaks are like pliers.
They'd get all excited when I'd fill the waterer and sometimes pinch the shit out of my legs.

A rat can kill a chicken in a coop

Bingo. Gotta think like the rat.
See the hole it comes from, think about where it's going and the most stealth way to reach there. Usually by running alongside any existing structure. Trap needs to be against the wall of structure/wood/board/fence. Cover trap to make it look like a nice tunnel to hide in, make sure the top is covered or else rat will be scared to go in.

Placement is more important than bait. I've killed mice and rats with traps without using any bait when done right, and have skunked out with nothing with incorrect placement despite peanut butter in trap.

I use live traps and then drown/shoot.

For what they are, they were good. No where close to todays stuff. But good enough to whack rats. Daughter also whacked several hogs with the one on her 300blk.

They will hoard that shit, get the blocks

The poison blocks from home depo didn't yield much results and the weather looked to break them down pretty quickly. We got the Ramik Green that CFJ recommended about two weeks ago, and I haven't seen a rat hole in the coop for about 4 days now. Hoping that's working!

Not my ducks, but a funny duck meme

Get some sweet feed and put in a bowl, mix in some cement and place a water source outside. We used to do this with barn rats in the corn crib.

They'll eat the feed and go directly to the water. Most of the time they didn't make it back. Gives new meaning to shitting bricks.

What kinda rat?
I had a pack rat a few years back. Ended up getting it by hanging both food (bait) and shiney washer spaced just right to it had to step up on the floor trigger of the have-a-heart to reach. I let it go in the yard, and let the dogs get it.
