Figured I'd try my hand at this again. Been many many moons since I've done the forum dance and Irate seemed to be free of the garbage that most all forums turned into. I've had the Tj for a few years now and ahs been through a number of changes already. Currently in the middle of a rebuild of sorts and figured I'd start documenting here verses instagrizzle and facetubes as much. So as for how it sat before it went back on jack stands it had a pretty much stock d30 up front minus the spartan locker, rear axle is an 8.8 with the Yukon ultimate 88 kit, spartan locker, Barnes truss kit and also 4.10. It will keep the rubicon express short arms for the time being til I recover from this wave and it'll get a 3/4 link set up. Currently on stock springs front and rear with extended front upper shock mounts and outboard rears running 10" bilsteins front and rear and looking to keep it on that same set. May need to raise the front but we'll see. Really like the way it wheels down low. Most people have bashed that setup but its been working great for me. 231 case will stay till I can swing an atlas. It has an advance adapters sye and a woods rear shaft.4.0, ax15, 4.10 gears on 35s.

Jump to current build:
Wagoneer front 44 - A mix of barnes and rubicon express brackets, detriot locker, yukon 4.88, yukon chromo shafts, ford/gm outer parts to go 5x5.5" pattern, old school selectro hubs, barnes gm rod end steering, ruffstuff panhard kit, all new balljoints, bearings etc.

Rear axle - Will remain the same besides a Yukon 4.88 set and a grizzly locker.

Changing to 5x5.5 meant I had to change wheels as well. Being as I don't plan on going bigger than a 35 for quite some time I wanted to try my hand at a set of DIY beadlocks from TMI.

Front axle is almost ready to finish mock up. Waiting on some good weather and a little spare time(the hard part) to get that done. Really just need to cut the factory track bar mount off the frame and get the new track bar mocked and cycle the axle. After that I can finish weld, paint and set the internals up. Once the front is in I'll pull the rear and do the gears and what not in it.

I'll post pics and what not as i go along. Looking forward to being here.

Before tear down.

A little of what's happening now. I'll post more later when I have more pictures.

Mini truss as low as i could get it.

Barnes combo spring brackets welded up.

TMI beadlocks happening.

Cleaning up the selectro hubs. Got these off ebay for $50 shipped.
IMG_5998.jpg

Cleaned up nice. Considered painting them but I think they'll work how they are.
IMG_5918.jpg

Had to shave the top of the pumpkin down to get it this low.
IMG_5998.jpg

Missing a couple things when this was taken and didn't use the axle side track bar bracket.

Nice work on the beadlocks. I like the selectros, had a set on a scout 2 I used to have. Much easier to engage/disengage than the Warns.

Ok stupid question probably, it's been years since I even considered putting an 8.8 in the rear o fmy jeep, but went with waggy axles front and back instead, but isn't the bolt pattern on the 8.8 5x4.5? Or am i remembering wrong?

It is but the Yukon shafts are 4.5” and 5.5” and 5.5” is an easy option for the front axle as well.

Really like the wheels!
I looked at that US Wheel model but unfortunately they didn't come in the pattern I need for mine. Ended up getting Vision D and having them powder coated white.

We put the US Wheel Rat Rod series on my wife's JK a few years ago and they've done great for the mild stuff she does.

Got the wheels ready to be mounted and the frame side track bar mount cut off. Hopefully this weekend I’ll get some time to get the housing mock up finished.

I am watching your build! Curious which track bar mount you will be running. I too, am going to run an aftermarket track bar mount on the frame to get rid of the single shear application and go to a bushing or johnny joint.

What are your plans?

I have a Barnes and a ruff stuff mount so either one of those. Probably the Barnes but we’ll see which fits best.

Ah ok, I have one of the simple clayton brackets... but was curious what your approach was going to me. I am probably a week or so out from doing mine. Watching!:smokin:

Made some progress today. Got the drag link, tie rod and panhard mocked up. Flipped the drag link to the top of the pitman with an insert and in doing so had to raise the radiator 3/4". Wanted to do an e fan anyways so a good time for that. Not super happy with the drag link to panhard length(5") but seems to me the only way to package it. I may be able to gain another 3/4" but wouldn't be easy. Will be raising the engine an inch to help clear the panhard and mini truss over the pumpkin. Still need to trim the axle side panhard mount down to help clear the frame over there. If it bumps out all fine after that it'll be time to final weld, paint and fill with all the parts to make it useful. Might be picking up some 38" creeps from a friend so maybe we'll have to see if I can cut enough quarter off to fit that on stock springs. I think that gets us up to speed.

Update: Front axle is pretty much finished. I tried using home made setup bearings for the first time and it'll be the last I think. Got a great pattern and pressed the bearings on and it all went to shit. Had to completely reset the gears but worked out. 5x5.5 conversion worked out great. If I were to do it again I'd just buy the ECGS kit from the get go. I saved a small amount of cash but not worth the hastle of souring everything seperatly. Lacking one stub shaft c clip ring, steering and panhard for the front to be ready to go. Also need to final weld the frame side panhard mount. Hoping to get the rear locker and gears in this weekend along with mounting all the tires. This'll be my first go at beadlocks and would be intersted to see what everyone is using for silicone sealant for steel wheels. Totally aware my garage is an absolute warzone.

Well it's together and driving. Bumped out good and just need to nut and bolt and it's ready to wheel. Pretty excited to use this thing and looking forward to having better gearing for wheeling. Did some driving around town. Drives pretty well but seems to be lacking some caster. Need to actually set toe sitting on its own weight as well. Has to drive down the road well. I prefer not to use a trailer and I've applied to UA21 already. Let me know if y'all have any questions. Hoping to sneak a trail day in soon.

Jeep has just been sitting in storage basically since put back together. Finally made it out of hiding last weekend. Honestly so happy with it. Cruises 70mph no problem and wheels great. Didn't even break anything. For sure need to build some sliders, flat bottom skid, and figure out what I'm going to do about a fuel cell. Needs to stay in the stock location but that can wait.

Ran a couple 4 diamonds that I had never been on and did everything I pointed it at. I was kind of worried about the old selectro hubs but they held up. Wasn't sure if I had them assembled right I guess. Gears were great on trial too being able to just idle in first in a lot of slow, more technical spots. Would still be nice to go with an atlas, dana 300 or even a rubicon case at some point down the line. Ran 10 psi front and rear and it seemed to like it. Ready to get back out here soon.

Not much happening here but in an attempt to keep this thing alive...

Wheeled a few times and been great. Really need to build a cross member so I can flat bottom it and after that needs a fuel cell figured out. Planning the body work and paint here soon. Don't hate on my pro paint skills.

Ended up building a new wheel due to the last coming loose.(a buddy broke and mine was put on the highway without being looked over. Stupid mistake.)

So I'm dumb and tried building a reverse mount wheel beadlock. Not cool. So I mounted them in the driveway, not easy but not bad. Taking the tire off was a whole other story. Will likely be going to a 17" wheel next to open up tire options. Planning on running 37s or 38s. Thinking trail gear beadlocks and 38" tsl's. Too much tire for a built 8.8? Probably but meh. A stock height tj on 38's seems cool. We'll see. Going wheeling in a couple days so maybe I'll have something to post here. Also planning on putting the rear seat back in for the kiddo. Going to Hot Springs in a couple months and would be cool if that could be her first ride. Will be moving the spare out back and building new provisions for a cooler, tools and what not.

Here's a couple pictures of the last time I was out. A buddies super clean Lj looks extra clean next to my junk.

Reading through I noticed you are trying to do a new fuel cell in the stock location. Have you seen the newish fuel tank from motobilt that mounts in the stock location?

I haven't but I'll have to check it out. The Tj fuel cells are just so expensive compared to a universal but there's something to be said about a bolt in, purpose built design vs. a universal that takes some work. Thanks for the heads up. I'll check theirs out.

Wheeled last Sunday and broke the right front ujoint too early in the day. Yukon is supposed to be getting me a replacement so fingers crossed. This is a line I've wanted to take for a while. Not much for most but fun with a 95" WB.

I snap an ear off the left front u joint right after this ends.
