Here is my rock crawler pretending to be a race truck.

This is the current state of the truck.

Hows the axle housings holding up? Figured they would go by now

Did you build the entire cage without a bender? Doesn't look too bad, I am thinking about doing the same.

Also, are you running a doubler? Doug from Ultra 4 tech told me that you couldn't run a doubler in 4600. Were you told differently, or are you just not planning on getting on the podium? :flipoff2:

I am not trying to be a rule Nazi, it is just the whole no doubler thing took me by surprise since I have read a few 4600 builds (all Toyotas now that I think of it) with doublers, and I am not sure if it is a recent change, or just a rule people were ignoring since they only check you for class compliance if you are a top finisher.

Yep, no bends in the cage and dual Toyota transfer cases.

This is from the 4600 class rules regarding transfer case.

3.5 TRANSFER-CASE 3.5.1 Any and all transfer-cases are permitted, providing they meet all the additional rules and regulations specified herein.

These are the overall Ultra4 rules about transfer cases.

2.9 TRANSFER-CASE
2.9.1 Transfer case shall be free of leaks. See Section 9.3.5 ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY for more information and rules related to environmental concerns and considerations.
2.9.2 Transfer case vents shall run to a fluid containment system. See Section 9.3.5 ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY for more information and rules related to environmental concerns and considerations.
2.9.3 All vehicles must be capable of transmitting power to all four wheels/tires, and must be equipped with a functioning low range. Low range is defined as a gear ratio that is lower (numerically higher) than 1:1.

It is covered under the transmission section :rasta:

3.4.1 Stock transmission must be retained, but may be replaced with any available in make/model/year. Any and all modifications are permitted, with the following limitations and exceptions: Stock transmission case/s must be retained, as originally manufactured. Auxiliary transmissions (e. g. secondary transmissions, under / over- drives, etc.) are not permitted.

Me:
Does this mean that doublers are not permitted, or is this more in reference to gear splitters such as the Advanced Adapters Ranger under/overdrives?

Doug:
Doublers are not permitted. You can change the transfer case to a different one.

Just a heads up since it would suck to get on the podium but have to forfeit your position.

My truck actually went through post race tech when they though I came in 2nd place. They had no issues with the truck except the 1 shock per corner thing lol. Most of the Toyota guys in the 4600 class are running some kinda dual toy cases or crawl box with Dana 300 with no issues, I think the doubler thing only applies to transmissions.

Hmm, interesting. I really wanted to run a doubler, but when Doug told me doublers aren't permitted, it really threw a wrench in my build plans (NWF integrated Dana 20 crawl box). It sounds like I may have been told wrong then

Did they realize you had a doubler (the Toyota setup seems a little more discreet than a billet crawl box) or mention anything about it during the post race tech?

Maybe I'll just say fuck it and run a doubler, and hope I don't get disqualified if by some miracle I actually end up on the podium. Sorry for the thread derail, but it is nice to discuss the doubler issue with someone who has already been competing with a doubler and was subjected to post-race tech inspection.

Nothing too cool going on. I got my flywheel machined, injectors serviced, t-case and trans back together and some engine accessories bolted on. Waiting on parts then I can get it all back in the truck.

Have you done anything about the shock mounts yet? It looks like they are back on in the picture with the engine out.

I got the engine, trans and t-case back in the the truck. Now who would like to make me a stand alone wiring harness? :flipoff2:

I been working on getting the fuel cell put in and plumbed up. I gave up on making a wiring harness and ordered one from ORS.

More fuel cell work going on. I got most of the lines mocked up and cut. I also got the 22re fuel pressure regulator return line adapted to AN -6.

Damn, I love the lack of tube bends on this truck.

I also agree on the crawl box... The rules state "Auxiliary transmissions (e. g. secondary transmissions, under / over- drives, etc.) are not permitted" but at no time has a crawl box been identified as an "Auxillary transmission" as far as I can recall. Yeah, it's an "Auxillary transfer case", but that isn't outlawed. And in racing, if it's not specifically illegal then it's legal enough to run. :D

Its racing if your not trying to bend the rules then you’re not racing.

I got the fuel pump, fuel filter and the fuel shut-off valve installed. Tomorrow I am replacing the fuel cell foam with AllTech fuel baffles. The transfer case was leaking so I pulled it out to have a look. The adapter and the rear reduction box are cracked. Time for some new parts.
