What's new

Race truck 4653

Need to get out the torch and a nickel rod for that cast housing. Or is a new housing in order?
The plan right now is to cut out a square where the damaged section is and weld in a piece of plate. I am debating on weather or not to run the assist ram. To be honest the steering felt a lot quicker and more responsive without the ram on the second lap.

Nice recap and I reckon all those experiences with self recovery really paid off!

If you zoom/squint you can see that y’all made a thumbnail in one of the livestream posts.

I'm not sure I'd want to cut a hole in it. I've had good luck with welding a Swiss cheese piece of plate to cast with preheat.

I can agree that assist kinda sucks through an ifs box. No ram does put more stress on the box and frame though. What about making it easy to swap in or out depending on the event?

That's the same thing Brad Lovell suggested. All I would need to do is weld a mount back on the axle.

Straightened out the body a bit, cleaned out a bunch of shrubbery from the cab, found a smashed air filter and checked out the new axle inspection hole.

It's all mild steel. From the first pic of it broken, just looks to me like the weld didn't penetrate:confused: What limits your steering? Ram or steering stops, or?

Steering stops. The front weld failed due to lack of penetration. Once that weld failed the ram was only held on on by a 2 pass weld on the back that eventually failed due to stress from the ram.

There was a fair amount to turning in this race.

Awesome to see ya ripping last weekend on the live feed.

For what it’s worth I don’t run assist on 37’s, and have never felt the need for it. I prefer to feel if a tire is bound in slow technical rock. I’ve only ever wanted a faster ratio when racing. My arms get tired from spinning the wheel more then the effort it takes.

I put on a 1:1.5 ratio steering quickener. That one little modification took me from back of the pack to top of the box. It is way harder to steer at low speed, or stopped now though. Still way worth it though for my type of racing which is close to what I saw last weekend in Moab, turn wise.

The ifs boxes have two ratios. The short snout, and long snout versions are about .2-.3 of a turn different iirc.

Nice work on the reverse dump flop recovery!

I looked into the steering quickener in the past. From what I read they are designed for circle track guys that go one direction and need small, fast corrections. Most people on the old site said it will kill the steering box prematurely.

For now I am going to run no hydro assist with the option to bolt it on. I would be interested in trying out a quickener, if you want to shoot me some pics and part #s.

Fixed a bent wheel today.

I’ve been running a 1:1.5 ratio Howe quickener mounted-coupled directly to the steering box for 3 seasons (about 10 - 1 hour races and about 1 or two trail weekends a season).

Same box and fluid for 8 years total. I put fluid in when I lose a bit from being upside down. I did blow a box way before the quickening from using a tow dolly to get around for the first few years.

I just have the stock steering cooler loop in front of the rad. The box gets HOT enough to bake the mud when the rest of the truck is wet.

The mounting of the quickener to be DIRECTLY inline with the steering box was the hardest part. I found when setting it up, wheels in the air and turning the wheel, it would be free and smooth until locking down the mounting bolts. I tried shimming, and re welding the mount a few times. I couldn’t get the bind of about .005-.003 off centre out of my mounting setup. In the end I threw a rag joint in, and all bind went away when tightened down.

I think some peoples experience in our sport may have overlooked how critical the mounting can be. I too did read all the stuff I could find on the old place, and from my own experience I can say most of the negative results others had might not be from the things they think.

You could mount it so it could be taken out super easily, and just put a longer steering shaft in.

Sorry I don’t have pics. The rug is not close by atm.

Here’s a pic of the quickener though. Mine is actually the early model of this one a circle track friend handed me.

That’s about all the beans I can spill on the topic.

anyone ever ran a quickener on full hydro, mine is a bit slow, maybe the pump maybe the flow rate maybe alot of things just curious

Not to derail too much, but a new orbital is ~$400 last I looked. That quickener is ~$200 + 2 joints(not cheap), some shafts and some time making it right. Plus you can sell your old orbital after.

Being cheap can be expensive :flipoff2:

Haha Prairie City last weekend.

Haha sorry Prairie City. Best short course race I’ve seen so far.

Working on excuses to go to Sturgis. Gotta sell it to the wife. Or not.

She don’t like noise dust race gas camping noise generators noise dust race gas camping bleachers sleeping in the pits racing dust noise food trucks no showers dirt early mornings late night thrashings did I mention dust so probably go alone.

Where is "here"?

I got the rear air bump cans cut off, redesigned and reinstalled. Swapped in a fresh u-bolt flip kit and knuckle ball wipers.

Next race for us will be the Visions off road race in July. That’s a perfect description of the Sturgis race. We will be at Sturgis again this year, its a great time.

that mount needs more weld attached to the housing. i would make that back side touch the housing and do what i could to make the mount longer and potentially spread out around the ram.
Yea, if I put it back on it will be fully boxed in.
