Quieter Grinding?

I have to do a lot of work at night… kids aren’t sleeping early enough, it’s 9pm and my newest thinks it’s party time. I don’t want to piss the neighbours off either

What are some quieter tool options? I’m working in a seacan… if I had a garage I’d keep the doors shut but it’s not really an option with the container unless my wife latches me inside.

Cordless seems quieter is that due to less RPM?

Sander disks cut faster than a hard wheel.

I use the portaband every time I can, instead of a zip wheel

Also get better with a torch and a plasma, and you dont have to grind as much. :flipoff2:

I hate grinding.
I use my portaband as much as I can. I don’t have a torch… used to have a plasma but sold it due to lack of use.

I hate cutting thin material with a torch. That said, they are an awesome tool to have. You can do alot with them.

100% I want an exhaust fan in there. The pin latches won’t work because the doors won’t seal unless the rods are turned in the locked position. Ideally I would cut a hole in the container for a man door and most of this would not be an issue
I forgot about that. :homer:

My cordless grinder might be a little quieter than my corded ones but I'm sure my neighbors would tell you it's not enough to make a difference. My Harbor Freight 12" disk sander is quieter than a hand grinder but only works if you can bring the part to the machine.

Was just going to suggest this, a disk sander is much quieter than a grinder when running. I have the King 12" disk and it works pretty decently once I rebalanced the wheel.

What are you grinding on? Table wise?

The more robust what you're clamping your part to the quieter it will be. Clamping your part to a chunk of wood will also cut down on the vibes that make noise.

Hang some junk used shag carpet on the walls to reduce echo and absorb some sound? Or go big bucks and lizard skin and follow Project Twins thread on car audio.

Acetylene is $$$ though. The 3ft tall tank I have was almost $180 to swap last week.
Can buy a Chineese plasma cutter for that.

You're getting fucked hard for that.

I can barely tell the difference between my cheap Chinese plasma cutters and the hypertherms. They're all disposable anyways.

Probably. I'd switch to propane if I used it much.

C25 shielding gas isn't a whole lot cheaper. I want to say $120 last tank I got. it's a bit larger tank though, closer to 4ft tall.

Belt grinder will remove way more material faster too. And waaaaaay quieter than a hard stone grinder. My 2x42 with a 3hp motor is a beast. Actually kind of scary if you crank it all the way up.

I'd love to justify getting a wider one. Local salvage place has had this one on their floor for a while now, but I think they want over a grand for it.

I was talking this style, so still sanding just rotary rather than linear...not a hard stone.

I don't like those style. I know that the disc is flat so the workpiece will be just as flat but the huge difference in SFM from middle to edge just makes me feel weird.

I know what you were talking about. A belt grinder would blow that thing away.

Yes. Those things are great for wood. Shit for any kind of real metal removal.

As said a modern cordless (without noisy fucking gears) and a flap wheel is way quieter than old school abrasive.
And yes a belt grinder will do most of the work in seconds.

Flap wheels are nice for cleaning things up, blending edges etc etc.

But for just hogging off the metal, they arent so great. Double up the sander discs to keep them a lil more rigid, and go to town.

Also, having a 7" grinder with a disc on it will really cut down on the amount of time you are grinding

Depends on what you're doing, can use it to your advantage to dynamically change removal rate by just moving the piece...works well if you're rounding stuff off so the contact area is small. That said, you do get uneven heating/removal if you're just trying to flatten some big chunk of square steel.

I'd be concerned about fire hazzard - some things may react poorly to streams of grinder sparks. Also about the perfect way for a spark to get trapped and smolder for a while before catching.
