Ok, I am about to buy a few sets of gears. Two for my never-ending TJ build (Project Iron III Oxide) and one for my CJ.
For the CJ (AMC360/t176/D300) I will be buying Thick cut 4.56s (Waggy D44) and for the TJ(2.5L/AX5/NP231) I will be buying 5.38s (1979 F250 HP D44/D60).
I know quality can very with companies and I have been out of this market for over 15 years.

Who are the go-to vs avoid-at-all-costs companies out there these days?

Richmond vs Yukon vs Motive vs ???

Randy's R&P get bought out?
Back in the day they where the go to. Good quality and only 2-3 week ship time being left coast.

Richmond hands down from my POV.

8620 or 9310.

learn me on the differences? This will not be a thrash and bash buggy. Actually quite the opposite haha. I plan to street drive this as well as have the capability of heavy crawling. It is only powered by a 2.5L (for the foreseeable future unless I get an awesome deal on a drivetrain haha)

My application was 180° opposite of yours I'm afraid used Richmonds 8620 gearset in a 1/4 mile car back in the late 70's early 80's. A 1948 ford anglia with a 9 inch.

High impact use.

my buddy that works in a large shop doing gears alot, says motive is the best for them now. randys is junk.

Avoid USA Standard gears.

Motive seemed way better in my experience, and is also what my local axle shop uses.

I don't think you can go wrong with Spicer SVL or Yukon. Especially Yukon if you get their "YES" plan on them.

I don't think we can get OEM Spicer ring and pinion for your old-school D44s, so the Spicer SVL will be the closest you can get to "OEM" for them.

I got Yukon's "YES" plans on my HPD30/C8.25 Yukon axle parts. I haven't broke anything yet to 'test' out the warranty however. Over 20,000 miles on 35" tires.

Even though it was said to avoid...

I installed USA standard gear in my Jeep. They’re the Yukon brand not good enough for Yukon name, but made by the same company. I don’t hate them. I set them up myself with no experience ever doing gears before. They don’t seem noisy. I don’t really know what I’d expect from gears really. I filed down the carrier side on both sets and both sets really didn’t need much. Gears patterned well too. This is in a high pinion 60 and a sterling rear.

The last dozen or so Yukon gear sets I have installed for customers had patterns that where acceptable towards the heal which bummed me out from a strength standpoint.

Much of the gear install groups talk highly of Revolution gears. I have no personal experience with them, but I would personally consider other options than Yukon/USA gear. that is, if you can; supply can still be a real issue for some axles.

I totally accept that they might have acceptable gear sets out there, maybe it is luck of the draw. I do think that saving $200 on a gear set is not worth any potential problems because of the labor involved in changing it out.

My biggest problem was the splines on the pinion were not shaped right, neither the brand new spicer yoke, nor the original Jeep one would go on or off. I got it stuck during setup and it took a 12 pound sledge to get it back apart. I had to use a file to get the yoke to where it would seat all the way but it was still a major PITA and it probably led to me accepting a borderline pattern which then ended up noisey.

I also did not like that they do not engrave set up numbers on their gear sets, they ostensibly have to set them up at the factory to check the pattern right? why not put that info on the gearset like all of the other aftermarket gear companies?

This was on my TJR Dana 44 rear.

I've had great luck with Motive gears in my stuff. Local driveline shop owner seems to like them a lot.

I'd like to give US Gear a shot someday, but their selection is a bit limited

I sell the most Yukon.
I like installing Motive and OE Dana the best.
Revolution is so so, only done a handful and I can’t say either way.

Lots of votes on Motive, I see.

Ok, this gives me a good direction to pick the top 3 mentioned and research.
Thanks! Still monitoring this thread if anyone has any other comments :)

Man I'm running Motives in one of my toy axles and have never had a single gripe about them.

Back when I bought them they were $150 and people were saying they were probably going to be noisy.
How times have changed:laughing:

I think my last set in the Runner are Revolution. I just called Chase at East Coast Gear Supply and asked him for whatever he thought was best and had a warranty. Some are made in China, some are made in other third world countries. Depends on the ratio IIRC. Call him and they will get you straight, shipping is close too.

A dude I follow on Instagram had brand new Yukon gears and his dial indicator was showing them out of spec. I always thought Yukon was the go to also.

Based on all the replies. It seems like motive is the way to go.

Another guy I know just got a regear set from Yukon with 5.13 gears for a jeep. Front gears were 4.56 and he didn't notice until all done and tried to drive it. Luckily not enough to damage the t-case or anything but now he gets to do the job/install again. I personally had 3 sets of Yukon gears installed in my 9" under my Tacoma prerunner. The last ones I had were super quiet and driven around town/short freeway speeds for over 2 weeks. When on my way to Baja they started howling and went bad. That was 3rd set that failed. Switched to Motive on that truck and never an issue after that. I have some Nitro gear sets for my current truck with D50 TTB Front, and D70 rear. They setup perfect without any problems so hopefully they last good under the abuse and power the truck has.

Then their marketing is spot on. Yukon does not make any gears themselves. Many Yukon gears (most?) I know are repackaged blems from China and India or they are discarded by manufacturers with stricter QC.

I prefer oem level stuff. Dana, Ford motorsport, Motive, Richmonds, GW have all setup well. I want to get my hands on some Revolution stuff.

I've set up a pile of Yukons. I've had some setup great and some like trash. I've seen some odd failures from them that weren't gears but well make me second guess using them. They are fawking everywhere though so hard to avoid. IIRC at one time they were the only place marketing 5.38s for a 14b.

I went to Randy's R&P in Everett Washington back in around 2011 and they had a QC test room for the gears. I believe I remember they had to pass a certain QC to be labeled Yukon or a bit looser tollerances for USA Standard. This was years and years ago and I believe the company has changed owners and everything has changed since then with businesses and suppliers.

I've ran yukon, usa standard and, Spicer oe. All of them ran ok but, if you can find them, run OE spicer. I get the best patterns and smoothest mesh with spicer. USA was noisy. Even with a great pattern, i could hear the gears. Yukon is fine if you cant get what you want from dana.

Do what degree to noise fit and finish translate to strength?

Because frankly IDGAF how it sounds as long as it's strong.

Ive used a couple US Standard's with no problems. I believe all gears would be fine, assuming the are set up right and broken in properly.
