Q & A with Jesse Haines

Suspension and weight placement all intrigue me and I end up with more questions then answers anytime I have conversations in person or on the internet.

Like, would linking the rear of my rig enhance its climbing ability over oem leafs sprung over (instead of under like factory) with an anti wrap bar even if link numbers aren’t perfect due to factory produced vehicle and body constraints.

Or do you get more out of just putting water in your tires when your about 50/50 weight bias (if the drivetrain can handle it)

That’s a specific question but I have so many generic questions too. All I’m saying is it’s intriguing stuff to me. Im a nerd

I'd have to dig up the bookmark, but he went pretty deep on PBB (or maybe FB) about his weight bias ideas. Clif notes that I remember were, overall bias in that range of 55-60% front but the sprung bias to the rear. The sprung weight bias to the rear works with the suspension better for the stuff he does. Rear engine and water in the front tires would do this in a buggy, but it'd be hard to pull off in most full-bodied rigs.

I would be extremely interested in reading that if you can dig it up

I recall when Jesse started working at the Badlands...Troy took him under his wing and they created some unique builds. I still recall them building a buggy that used a 9" center section for a transfer case :)

He's definitely on the short list of cutting edge in the hardcore crawling crowd.

Doesn’t look like I can find the info I talked about.

The 9” diff t-case deal used some Oldsmobile Toranado parts.

It was called the Badlands Apache. Google on P4x4 and the pics still work from 2006.

Iirc the Apache is in Mexico inoperable.

Is goatbuilt still doing his chassis kits? I need to start figuring out my last buggy.

Lil Rich was building one with 5.3/TH350/D300, but I think life got in the way and last I heard it's been mothballed.

I know jesses a fan of the 300, I wonder if a old school 5.0/c6/atlas would fit.

Rich Klein is building one with a 5.3L, TH350, and Dana 300. A 5.0L/302 is smaller than an LS. I am not sure how a C6 compares to a TH350, but a C4 is way smaller.

EDIT: JohnnyJ beat me to it

I think the atlas is too big. I got a c5 case (improved flow over c4) but going c6. Building a c4 is crazy money and not really justified to me.

If you're serious about building it, I would get the dimensions and talk with Jesse. Do you already have the Atlas? Could you go towards the midnight metalworks D300?

You can fit an extra clutch disk in the c5 case and then get the shorty tailshaft conversion. That would open up the possibility of running the case divorced in a shorter over all then married case and open up more options for packaging. Just a thought.

My c5. The thing is small. Thats a stanly 25' tape for scale.

When I saw it last April it was no further along than the pics in the build thread.

Rumor has it there is progress, goal is to have it ready for Winter 4x4 Jamboree.

Were you going for the funniest post or most mis-informed post of the day?
Both :flipoff2:
Wow, some of you guy can’t handle a little roast.

Seems everyone is in love with everything moon buggy. Maybe I’m old school but, I still think some of his coolest work of the time was when building the Torchmate Ultra4 buggies.

If ya ever want a spare case let me know.

Yeah, that Torchmate car was real cool, except for the TTB....
