The little TV that came with the house is not cutting. I think it's in the 42 or 46" range for scale in the pic...

I was pretty set on getting a ~$1300 LG 4k UHD model, but then I started looking in to the newer laser ones and it seems like I'd regret not going that route....but now I'm looking at $2500-ish plus I'd still need to buy a screen.

The wall is about 12' wide x 10' tall, which would give me up to 15' diagonal if I could use the whole thing. Shitty pic, but this is the worst I'd get for sunlight. Early morning it comes in from above. There are only a couple skylights and side foundation windows behind so I think it would work out well for projector-ing.

For those that use projectors for everyday viewing, is it a PITA? Worth it to go up to laser?

Or should I just get the biggest (80"?) LED I can find for under a grand?

I think with your setup you will be better off with a large TV. I've tossed around the idea of a projector but you really need a large enough room and it needs to be very dark or you'll end up with a shitty picture and hate it. If I ever build I plan to have a long media room with no windows for the perfect setup.

100% TV...projectors are noisy, need space to be mounted to project, aren't as bright/get washed out easily, don't look as good (big ugly screen).

A 75-80" TV will be plenty big, if not too big for the space. You don't want an overwhelmingly big screen that looks awkward in the room.

you want a tv.

or perhaps more than one TV.

I think that even a baller projector isn't going to do great.

Too bright in that room for a projector.

I have one, love it, but it's in the basement, no windows and it's in a 16x24 room with a lot of sound.

Home gamer projectors aren't great unless it's pitch black and you have a bright white screen to shoot onto.

I'd get a 80"+ TV to out there.

Picking up a Sony Bravia XR series, mainly due the processor and other features that made it stand out against the LG and Samsung , may give them a hard look..

My in laws just bought a house built on a hill, the bottom room only has 1 window. I'm trying to my FIL to get a projector for it and make it a sweet home theater type of deal. I really don't know shit about them except it has to be dark.

This.

A dedicated light controlled room and the projector hands down best value for the size. A room like that it would be really tough to get even acceptable results.

My brother has an 85 LCD he got from Costco. Look very nice

That room is way to bright for a projector IMO unless you only watch your porn late at night.

Clean your fucking house too. :flipoff2::flipoff2:

Some of the newer projectors claim to be stupidly bright to work in lighter rooms. That pic was about a worst case scenario - that was about 8 am this morning and the sunrise comes right through that upper window this time of year. It's much darker than it looks in that pic.

I have a 65" samsung sitting a spare room that I was originally going to put on this wall, but I think it's still too small. I kind of want over the top big here. Right now I can't even read text on that 46" when I'm sitting on the couch. Again, don't think the pic shows the scale very well.

Off to see what's out there for black friday deals on 85 inchers...

Blow me. I still haven't figured out what to do with the 14 fucking antique coffee grinders and all the other shit that came with the place.

80-85 led as others have said that room is too bright for a projector. What is the size of the wall? An 80 will be 3 times as much 'picture' as that 42. fb37fdc1becfbf23f907e001f2469930.jpg

ignoring the endless clutter that looks like a cool house :smokin:

i vote is 85" tv :grinpimp:

the thing with projectors is that your darkest dark will be ambient light levels in the room.

so if you have uncontrolled light, the contrast and hues really suffer.
It may work in a daylight bright room, but the image is going to be really flat and washed out.

having used an lcd projector for years in place of a tv i can concur

maybe I've installed a dozen or 12 in big ass church sanctuaries.......

Almost always suggest TVs first, as they just work better in bright rooms.

i had a projector given to me and i used it for years, it was good for gatherings when you needed a big screen but quality wasnt the greatest and always fighting the light as you described, now that giant flat screen tv's are so cheap they are the way to go. i didnt feel like spending 200$ on a replacement bulb for the projector when it went out about 6 years ago so i bought a 65" flat screen for 600$ on sale

So that existing TV is actually a 52"

Measuring, I have about 10' wide and 9' tall to play with. Holding a tape where an 80" or 85" panel will sit, I think it'll work well.

We have both. the projector sucks in a bright room. get the giant tv.

I don't know about the brand new ones, but my 3yr old LG won't allow ESPN+ on the TV. You have to get a Roku or similar. Which I guess only really counts when you're too lazy to take the tv off the wall because the only HDMI jack available without dismounting it is broke. :flipoff2:

What really blows in a large room is the sound.. Most consumer receivers/processors don't have enough balls to sound good. Speaking of "kool aid"; cousin bought a high end Macintosh receiver. IMHO: sounds like crap. I am in the hunt for a good preamp/ processor to drive a couple of bad ass Crown amplifiers. :smokin::smokin:

I use a marantz for my theater. Sounds great once everything is dialed in and you treat the room.
