is anyone shooting steel targets with pistol for non-comps and what are you using? JC steel has some ground spring poppers that i like (IPSC 1/4" Thick Ground Popper System), and shootsteel has a speed rack (Speed Rack) also has poppers too (3/8" AR500 - 22" Classic Popper with base).

yes yes, build them is always a way to go but i dont think you can get AR500 target cut like that for much cheaper. JC steel seems to have the best prices. thinking maybe 3-4 ground poppers and the speed rack as a fun practice setup....

Girlfriend used to work at a shop that machined turbopumps (she designs them). I have a few 8" round 1/2" thick Inconel plates (high temp stuff like in rocket engines) from there. Pistol rounds, including .44 mag., barely leaves a mark. Point: 1/2" steel (any kind) should last a long time for pistol, however rifle rnds leave a fairly generous crater but haven't completely penetrated... yet. I hang mine from the rear of a truck frame I found in the back 40 (it has a closed knuckle D44 that I didn't know even existed) using it's tierod as a cross bar to hang the gongs from/on. I have replaced the steering components (drag link, tierod, etc.) on my Dodge CTD and used those to weld the gongs to and hang from the tierod crossbar. I could, at one time, also get scrap 1/2" thick steel an a local steel yard for $0.50/lb. I got $0.00 into these using basically throwaway stuff. You asked what I was using...

I've heard whore stories about shooting cratered steel at relatively close ranges. For pistol, I want AR500 not mild. I've got 4 ar500 squares at 200 yards right now. Need to space the rest out to 1000 yards

Yep. I’ve been blasting the fuck out of a piece of 1/2 mild steel for going on 4 years. 22lr 9mm 357 mag 300 blackout and 5.56. It eats it all no problem.

Personal "horror" story, we were plinkin from 10 yds to 200 a while back...
The 10 yd ar plate spit a 22 back, and it flew right over the shoulder of the guy standing next to the 22 owner.
Dug it out of the camp gear in the bed of the truck the was being used for table duty behind him.

Needless to say the ar steel stays out at +50 now...

wish I had a 1000 yd spot to play...

i actually shoot the AR steel at 50 with 22 and pistol and had jackets hit the trees behind me before. i JUST redid the hangers on it and angled them down some now.

had a guy out in Paradise cut me some 2/3 size ipsc silhouette targets. I think he advertised on face book market place. ar500 for cheap, this was a couple years ago.

I can’t remember exactly where you live, but this guy is in Bandera area. I bought my smoker from him years ago.

So maybe this is the way to do it?:grinpimp:

Yesterday we ran a dead end trail up at the lake, and at the end of the trail we stopped for lunch, and found a brandy new set of 6 ?3\8? Orange gongs in the grass, strike count half a box of 22..

Yea I know " cool stary brah":smokin:

Nice find.

I rarely use steel platform for pistol shooting. No horror story but tend to use leftover wood and quick build to shoot at with papers.

These should be plenty fine for you.
