Anyone into pipes around here? I'm a cigar guy and keep my humidor topped off as much as possible. I recently bought a pipe on a whim and tossed in some captain black and knew I had another hobby immediately.

I've been exploring some blends from the cigar shop the next town over. I also just ordered a peterson system xl315. My current pipe is a renn fest special, not great but works (churchwarden).

I still haven't mastered packing the thing but I'm enjoying the new rabbit hole to run down.

I got into pipes about the same time I got into cigars. I doing usually have time to smoke a whole cigar so pipes fit the bill.

I have a Mr. Brog I got from my local smoke shop. I don't run a filter I just puff it.

Any tips for keeping it going and not getting tongue bite?

I love to smoke a pipe, but it's different.

I have to remember to smoke it with my mouth in small puffs. The "ppm" (puffs per minute) is the variant to set keeping lit. I will inhale some once it's "staged" in my mouth.

No idea what the hell I'm doing, but I like smoking a pipe sometimes and that was what improved my experience the most.

Do you do the false light? Also, not packing too dense.
Ya I do. And I'm doing the 3 pinch pack method to load it. But a small-medium amount of pressure is hard to acquire. It's so vague. And I have no basis of comparison to know how tight to get it. (Giggidy)

A post from a different forum, I know nothing about pipes.

"I've found the biggest factor contributing to a good smoke is an open, easy draught.
With an easy draught, the tobacco burns cooler and tastes better without tongue bite. Quite often, you can easily turn an OK smoking pipe into a great smoker by opening up the draught."

I'll try a looser pack this evening during the game and see how it goes.

I'm hoping it's one of these things...

The "perfect" pack is all about preference I've found. Start with a light pack and gradually increase them. A light pack won't do anything but smoke a little faster.

It also helps to dry out your tobacco a little. Spread it out break up any clumps and let it sit for 10 minutes or so.

I packed a little more loose and took more but snake pulls. Holy shit what a difference.

This blend is freaking awesome.

I’ll look at the pipes my dad gave me and post what I can find. We started smoking corn cob pipes in college when the cigars started costing too much $. They burn better once they are used a handful of times. The little packer tool is helpful also.

When I was doing construction I worked with a guy who had a pipe in his mouth constantly...if he wasn't eating or talking (even then, sometimes) it'd be hanging out. He only ever lit it during breaks or occasionally if he was waiting for someone to finish a job ahead of him, and whatever blend he had always smelled pretty nice.

I wouldn't mind enjoying one every now and then but that level of commitment impressed me.

Dunhill early morning pipe and night cap are great. I like cigars too but pipe tobacco is ridiculously cheap. Prefer poker pipes.

Going to go smoke a bowl of night cap now :smokin:

I have a Missouri meerschaum pocket pipe, I should have paid attention to dimensions when I ordered it, a Missouri meerschaum corn cob and my rennaissance festival Gandalf-esque church warden. I ordered a Peterson System XL315 yesterday since I seem to be digging this so much. I've got nice savinelli church warden and a Peterson straight stem on my wishlist. 😁

I want to make something to held em all that sits on top of my humidor.

Last night I had G.L. Pease "quiet nights", it was good. I also had Cornell and Diehl "Virginia Gentleman", that's the one I loved.

So far I've had captain black original (not bad), C&D's Autumn Evening (delicious), C&D's Super Balkan (not bad) and cheapo vanilla something (not terrible but not good).

I've got a better vanilla and an apple blend coming. I ordered them before I realized aromatics probably weren't ideal. I'll grab another corn cob for the aromatics and leave the natural blends for the better pipes.

Natural blends are where it's at. The only aromatic I liked was Morton's cellar(?) But sadly they went out of business. That was amazing.

I like cobs myself.

I don't smoke but I always wanted one of those Gandalf pipes. I was always convinced that the "hobbit leaf" that he always smoked was pot.

I like the one you have on display.

I've debated getting a "nicer" cob for my camping trips. I don't see myself doing a lot of post smoke cleaning while chilling around the campfire but I don't want a ahit pipe for then either.

Damn thing smokes pretty good considering it's a cheapie. I paid 70 at the festival for it, I was caught up in the moment and didn't think it through.

I later found the same fucking thing on etsy, with a stand, for 25. :homer:

I don't regret it I guess, it opened the pipe world to me and I still dig the looks.

I’m pretty sure there is a corn variety/hybrid that was bred specifically for corn cob pipes. That’s all I have to contribute.

A buddy in college smoked a corncob pipe like the OP has. He said that getting the packing right was half the battle.

This is what I was expecting based on thread title. I'm allergic to tobacco, but love pipe and cigar smoke.
