Picking a budget trail rig?

I was watching a porno the other day and they asked the female talent what size dick she preferred and she held her hands like a foot apart and said 7" and literally everyone on the set started cracking up.

Women suck with measurements. You think your wife is gonna be able to tell the difference between 35 and 37"?

Talked with the wife last night and she is pumped, a little too pumped. She called her aunt and uncle who have a 2001 superduty ranch truck, crew cab, 5.4L, short bed with standard(wanted an auto, but all my offroad rigs have been standard so... I can deal) sitting in the barn. They said it runs and everything is good but needs ball joints, and the tires are completely shot according to her aunt, wasn't really looking to sell but if we want it $3500. They only use it on their property hauling hay and moving big shit We are going to go look at it this weekend. She wants to make it a convertible and cage it like dirt everyday asap.... On that I was reminded of reason 10,375 of why I married her!

They are definitely cool but rare. It would be hard finding one in good enough shape to build off of.

I know where one is located. Has a little rust, but definitely buildable. It's a 74 which means the top removes all the way to the windshield, and the top is in great condition.......heavy as fawk, but very nice. It has a strong running 360, granny low 4 spd, awd tc and later model axles with the 5x5.5 bolt pattern. I'm sure it can be had for very cheap, but it's in AL.

Land Rovers are cheap. I ran one for years and got every penny out of it. You can find them cheap in peoples back yards broken. Buy a few of them for parts because if you try to buy parts outright you will be poor, thats why people park them when they break. Can afford to buy but cant afford to fix.

Sounds like its priced at the high end for a 5.4 that needs work. I'd be looking at the 06 linked in here. That one has the good motor and the front end you wouldn't break on 44s

Well, at the sceep like pace you’ve been working at, you should have that wrapped up for her spring of 2023:lmao:

What was the goal with your 08(?)? Get it built and ready to wheel for a trip that was like 2 months out? And then it went like every project I start, where it takes 10 times longer than you thought and you end up working on everything else possible besides your project

Meh, make it 5 projects in front of it now... my wife's suburban needs all the moving parts in the front end replaced:rolleyes:

Mine is opposite. She thought my 37'swere 40s, and is gonna think the 35s are 37's:lmao:
But since I'm putting it back on stock suspension I'm surely not going to try to grenade the front and rear diffs just to do some moderate fire road driving:homer:

Bad ass! I'm betting your getting it no matter what lol

Ima guess it will be best for him to let his wife pick the trail truck body, and he can pick the drive trane. This is how he can get what he wants in the long run anyway. The body just gonna get raisin'd up no matter what.

I've been down that road once, and it turned into such a money pit! I will always have a special place in my heart for Rovers, but I dont think I could ever own another one.

I agree, and I really want an auto, but wife really wants to go look at this one and if she gets her way we will more than likely buy it. However, the 5.4L aren't all bad, I had a 2002 F-150 that had the 5.4 with like 250k miles and it was a great truck. The axles only have to hold up until I get all my build parts together and then I'll swap for rockwell axles. I told the wife there will basically be 2 stages for this truck, stage 1 is cut up body to fit military 37's w/ humvee rims, cage and scab a winch on the front, scab a skid for the tranny and t-case, weld diffs or lunch box lockers, maybe a hydro assist. Then stage 2 will be a complete tear down, redo the suspension, rock wells, full hydro, and all the bells and whistles. Stage 1 will goal will to keep it street legal-ish.

Only killer is I wasn't plannning to buy anything until March, but we have such a bug to get back into it we are jumping the gun a little, but it happens....lol.

You can drill the front leaf springs to push the front pin about 3/4 forward and almost clear 37s stock

Ive thought about this a good bit. It was my plan until I bought my 79. Beater super duty is going to be hard to beat for a budget wheeler. You start off with a solid axle, and one tons at that. Sure beats spending weeks stuffing a 60 under a comparable gm of the era

Hack the rear frame off at the spring hanger, build a flat bed for cheap, ditch the fat lip front bumper and you will have acceptable approach and departure angles. You can even leave the wheelbase right where it’s at and still be happy with it. Leaf springs are cheap and proven, and easy to dick with to get more flex. It won’t have the performance of coil overs and links, but you want cheap and easy so you can enjoy it while you buy parts.

You won't lose much chopping the back on the 05+ trucks, there is only about 6" of frame past the spring hanger on those Super Duty trucks. On a gas truck, you can gain a ton of approach angle by removing the huge crash bar under the front bumper, and cutting back the long frame horns a bit. If you lose the a/c, you can raise the trans cooler and shove a winch pretty far back in the core support.

Keep the ac, put the trans cooler in the bed with a fan. Or some weird other area under the hood.

We were supposed to go look this weekend, but we decided to go look last night.

Welp, the aunt's old farm truck was a bust. It's an extended cab. My wife said it was a crew cab, as soon as we pulled up I told her it wasn't going to work. It was actually way nicer than I expected. It runs really nice and was like a green color, you dont see a lot of them. They said they have been talking about selling it to help fund a new sxs, so they are going to go ahead and list it for $4500 since we dont want it(and my buddy that went with us was drooling over it, so he may end up buying it anyways).

I told the wife we need to slow down a bit and just keep our eyes pealed for a smoking deal. I'm in no hurry to get one since I wont touch it until after our car port and house skirting is done.

I'll probably rip the A/C stuff out, but I will definitely relocate the radiator to the bed.

I'm in the process of getting a shorter radiator and condenser so they'll sit above the framerails on my 07. Looks like a newer chevy truck a/c will work out, but I'm still mocking it all up.

If you're gonna throw money at it, just go to a wrecking yard or tow yard and pick from their runners.
