Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Wednesday the Pentagon will withdraw almost 12,000 troops from Germany, a move that has been condemned by Republicans.

Esper said about half of the 11,900 will be placed in other NATO countries and the rest will return to the United States. Many of the units will rotate back to Europe in the future.

“Our aim is to implement these moves as expeditiously as possible… particularly being fair to and taking care of our service members and their families,” Esper said in a statement. “We could see some moves begin within weeks; others will take longer.”

“The repositioning of our forces in Europe constitutes a major strategic and positive shift.”

The Trump administration complained last month that the government was paying too much to put troops in Europe and European nations aren’t paying enough for their own defense.

Twenty-two Republican members of the House armed services committee signed an open letter last month opposing the withdrawal.

“NATO allies, such as Germany, should do more to contribute to our joint defense efforts,” the letter said. “We also know that the forward stationing of American troops since the end of World War II has helped to prevent another world war and, most importantly, has helped make America safer.”

“[T]he overall limit on troops would prevent us from conducting the exercises that are necessary for the training and readiness of our forces and those of our allies.”

Hey 13 guess what

I'm a fan.

We can't flat abandon our strategic allies.

But that doesn't mean we have to be their sole source of protection :mr-t:

The French deployed tactical nukes for defense when they left or refused NATO generations ago. What the fuck we are doing in Germany still is beyond comprehension.

What is that about 1/4 of us troops in Germany? Last numbers I saw was as of 2014, there had been about 49k troops. What is wrong with moving them to more strategic locations?

smaller drawdown than originally threatened, but it is good to see that the NATO/EU posturing about "pay up or deal" is bearing some fruit.

Bush taslked about taking the troops out of Germany and more than one mayor started crying about how his town would be hurt if the base closed

The Fulda Gap is not the concern it was in the 70s.

Move them to Poland, where we already have an invitation. Or better yet Ukraine...

Ukraine would be complicated, but interesting. Like having Russian tanks and paratroopers in Toronto.

Oh yeah, plunking them in Ukraine would get stuff started for sure! But really the time to do that was before the Russians had their foothold and consolidated power in the area.

Putting them in Poland would definitely send a message. Both previous World Wars rolled through there.

“NATO allies, such as Germany, should do more to contribute to our joint defense efforts,"
Damn right. Pay up Germany.

And like someone else said, send them to Poland. They are conservative, don't bend over like bitches like Germany, and don't play the progressive bullshit liberal agenda

...Putting them in Poland...Both previous World Wars rolled through there.

If I was taught/remembered correctly, so many military conflicts was fought in the area that Poland wasn't a country like 7(?) times-

I called it a couple days ago. This is part of the hard German antitrump propaganda they've been blasting out to the fatherland. Eviltwits been eating up his handlers suggestions

He swallows easily and willingly.

I'm good with this. Get them home.

Indeed, a couple of town are quite sad, they have a lot of jobs with "the Americans".
But they like Chinese investors just as much. Russians, not so much.

It's not Germany, hell - all other countries are shaking their head and watching with utter disbelief. Nobody in Germany cares about America. The official news is pretty devoid of emotion over here. The shit show that is Amerca these days might come up in a 3rd or 4th story. There is no "Trump is a bad man" spiel going on at all. OpEds, yea of course.
At most, there would be a very slight change in the tone of voice from the news anchor, but people would start complaining about "feelings" in a news report.

You won't understand shit, but the tone of voice in the first 60 seconds should be telling. The first news is about the troops being pulled.
Have a look for yourself what news is like here:

They have been absorbed and liberated countless times. I'm sure they have a complex from it.

If you have ever played RISK you know why... it is just in the way of everything! One thing I never do in that game is try to hold Europe. Too many directions to get attacked from. That in essence, is Poland.

They are the worst Nazis of the EU BY FAR. Even banned pride flags and gathers just some months ago.
A sad place where women work hard and it seems the guys are constantly in the woods...

The irony of a German calling a Pole a Nazi...

I've met several Poles and while I would describe them a Religious conservative I would not consider them Reichtag material.

If it is like you describe then your stereotype image of Americans will fit right in there!

You understand that things have changed in the last 70 years, right?

Freed Germany took the "new" freedom and made a great country out of it, surpassing all it's "freers" by far. All in a couple of years.
You say "Muslim infestation", but you just lack the ability to get it.

As of August 2019, around 30 different LGBT-free zones have been declared in Poland, including four voivodeships in the south-east of the country:[SUP][1][/SUP][SUP][2][/SUP][SUP][4][/SUP][SUP][30][/SUP] Lesser Poland, Podkarpackie, Świętokrzyskie, and Lublin.[SUP][2][/SUP] The four Voivodeships form the "historically conservative" part of Poland.[SUP][13][/SUP]

Powiats adopting such measures include: Białystok County, Jarosław County, Lesko County, Lubaczów County, Mielec County, Puławy County, Ryki County, Świdnik County, Tarnów County, and Zamość County.[SUP][3][/SUP]

As of February 2020, local governments controlling a third of Poland officially declared themselves as "LGBT-free zones", pledging to refrain from encouraging tolerance or funding NGOs working for LGBT rights.[SUP][33]

And they hate everyone that is not polish. They are very American in that regard and really don't belong in the EU anymore ;)[/SUP]

Trumps got free rent in the German 's head. We are pulling out, You are doomed, The poles hate you, always have, most of them can kick your blond hair blue eyed ass. NATO will not save you. You fucks hate everyone and live it. I'm gonna ask Don to turn off the German internets.

Your words.

From the German Times.

"Donald Trump is causing Germans so much emotional grief these days that they can no longer soberly distinguish what’s good and bad for Germany,"

"If Germans were honest with themselves, they would have to admit that there is an element of projection involved in their intense preoccupation with the US president"

"A majority of Germans say they would not be willing to devote the necessary resources to defend their NATO allies against attack."

They were going to move them around for other reason anyways, why not maximize the politics and associate it with Germany's NATO payments? That's how this works.

Changed maybe, but Germany is the original home of Nazis and will forever have to live with that. :flipoff2: I was born in Germany as an Army brat. I've lived there too as a teen. I understand the country better than you think.

Where did I say "Muslim infestation"? I thought you were the one who railed against that?

The people of Poland are free to use their political system to build the Poland they want. Including their stance on Gays. I don't agree with it, personally. I think everyone lucky enough to find someone to love and live with happily should be allowed to do so but I am also not interested in forcing my ideals on another Country. But maybe the EU has different thoughts on telling their countries how to think? Are their any rules about this that they are not enforcing?
