So we’re finishing our basement and I’m trying to figure something out. My son and daughter will get a room for toys and tv/video games. Like 2 TVs on the wall, a couch, bean bag chairs. Toys and the like. However two TVs going at once doesn’t work in my mind. But I’m not a gamer. I can see my daughter watching YouTube videos or girly shows. And my boy watching his own thing or playing Xbox. Ages 11 and 9 so this will be a long term deal.

ideally I want my boy out of his room because I don’t want him being a hermit (we wheel, hunt, bike etc he’s not a basement dweller but I want him in a shared space rather than isolated in I’m his room, maybe I’m wrong I dunno). But on the other hand a game system in his room makes sense for privacy and noise and being bothered.

who here has something figured out, or am I thinking too deep about the subject.

If my kids want to watch tv there is one in the living room. However we are planning on having them both in 1 bedroom with limited distractions and then a play room

One TV, or better yet, no TV...we had to play outside as kids and then in the evening we'd play with lego or draw or other simple stuff like that. When we finally got a computer it was only for a limited time each night.

Frankly, I wouldn't be encouraging more screen time by getting two TV's...at least with just one they'd have to take turns and only get half the time. It also teaches them to share and not always get what they want.

For the no tv old fucks. Our kids play outside when it’s nice, also play basketball soccer and baseball and we have a lake house full of beach trips and boating weekends. But when it’s freezing, raining, hailing, dark, etc. get off your high horse. It’s not my fault your parents were poor and could only afford one tv.

and I want to watch what I want to watch and I don’t want my kids watching murder, war, curse word filled movies.

We have one TV in the house. My kids don't really watch TV. We don't have any video games. They read, play with legos, build stuff in the shop, play outside, do chores, etc etc.
Maybe I'm an asshole, but my kids aren't growing up in front of the TV. They're 8 and 10.

Decent cordless headphones are pretty affordable nowadays. Everyone in the house will be happier with them than without

This...so much this. They will be way better for it too.

Our old black and white went out when I was in Jr High, anouther one didn't cominto the famliy till I was out of high school and I bought another old B&W for $10. from a guy at work, but it staid out in my room and didn't get much use because I worked nights

All modern gaming consoles use headphones so that's pretty simple. I wouldn't have the TV's on the same wall though, maybe adjacent walls but not side by side.

I grew up with 1 tv, I WAS the remote control. We watched whatever mom & dad wanted to watch and if they wanted to watch something we couldn't (never happened, bible thumpers) or more likely we didn't want to watch we could go to our rooms or go outside. We didn't have much say in what was on tv because we weren't the bosses of the house, our parents were.

We have just 1 tv as well. It is a tough battle with kids with laptops, ipads etc. But, I think you gotta find ways to limit screen time... a big part of that is you. If you limit your time and keep them busy too... it will work. If you watch a lot of tv and are on your phone all the time, well, go get the two tv's and bluetooth headphones for them.

I did a love seat with 2 42” TV’s about 12” apart. Each tv with its own game system and head sets. Bean bags next to the love seat. The kids love it. It’s the kids gaming area.

For the gamer, they will want a headset for talking, so TV volume won’t be an issue....but...the yelling and screaming while playing will bother the shit out of the TV watcher.

same here, I’ll call it two tv’s, as one is a 12’ screen in a separate building that is a “special deal.” One tv in the house. Play, draw, etc is the name of the game.

Yup. This is how it is in our house.

When we had our second kid, I gave up my office and we turned it into the play room. I moved the office into the bedroom, and they have an area where they can go play outside of the bedrooms.

Just this Christmas we got them a TV for the play room. It got super annoying with them bitching about the living room TV. Now they can fight over it in their own area.

As for 2 TVs in the same room headphones are your friend. Especially for a gamer. Headphones far outpace speakers depending on the type of games you play.

2 tvs? headsets?

Nothing like sibling sitting feet apart from each with zero interaction because they are both in separate worlds.

Knock it off. They share 1 TV. Only 1 tv, and if they can't agree then nobody uses it or you put on a show they both like. Other than that, they can take turns and be honest with each other and who knows? Might even learn a little skill in life to negotiate and get along and interact like humans are supposed to.
