“On Monday, a New Mexico Democratic state senator introduced a bill that could criminalize parents who teach their children how to shoot firearms if that child is not deemed an “authorized user,” specifying, “A minor may be an authorized user only if the minor is at least twelve years of age and has successfully completed a firearm safety training course.”

I bet we’ll see more of this type of shit coming in the future. I feel bad parents have a hard time taking their kids shooting as it is with the ammo being so hard to find

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. My kid started going to the range with when she was almost 6. She knows how exactly what a gun does and can go shoot whenever she wants to, all she has to do is ask. I don't have to worry about what she would do if she found a gun at a friends house.

Well, then there should be companion legislation reintroducing Gun safety courses into school. It's only fair!

But really parents are the ones to determine when their kids are mature enough to start learning about guns. Not Politicians

There is a bill in TN for this now.

I hear rumors, that back in the olden days, schools had shooting clubs that practiced under the football bleachers. The horror, I can't believe anyone survived.

you really want someone from the school board in charge of gun safety education of your kids?

I see no win in that...

You are right there!

I was hinting at the NRA Eddie Eagle classes that used to be in schools. But ever since "Guns Bad" Eddie has been banished.

the old school building in town has a rifle range in the basement for 22s.
I guess back in the day the ROTC used it.

This is just the start...

Religious and other traditions/beliefs will follow....

Hillary Clinton foreshadowed this in the 2016 campaign cycle - it takes a village.

What is the alternative? Ban them, make them illegal? The more kids shooting the more likely our future isn't all about guns bad must cancel.

I grew up shooting at a young age. One of the first Boy Scout badges I got was Rifleman. I'd been in youth shooting camps before that. When I got to high school (Arlington, VA) I joined the high school rifle team and shot varsity as a freshman. We had an indoor range in the basement for the 22's but we also had pellet rifles and practiced with those in the theater room.

If you are a shooter and believe in shooting then kids shooting should be a part of the solution.

Crazy shit. My high school had a shooting club. The range was in the basement of the grade school. After high school let out members of the shooting club would walk into the grade school (still in session) carrying their rifles down to the range.

Well, that's some bullshit. I thought new Mexico was good for freedom?

Now thats the funniest thing ive heard in a year, you know we are still under wuhan lujans thumb right

New Mexico is the most schizoid state in the union, every 8 years we elect republicans who come in shore up the economy, fill the state coffers, eleminate as much of the Dems bullshit as they can then after 8 years the Dems win in a landslide and they start fucking the state over again. Which is why we have The Carpetbagger Bill Richardson's train to nowhere, and the Space port that nobody uses. But the oil and gas industry that puts millions of dollars in the state in saleries and taxes is vilified and tried to run out of the state!

Parents standing up against government over reach, perhaps?

Government is literally testing the waters - over and over - to see what people will put up with. Thus far, it seems they haven't found a limit.

When I was 12, in middle school, we had outdoor rec, and would shoot skeet, handguns, rifles, etc. That was only 25 years ago.....

It's a slippery slope and no coming back from it and "they" are taking our freedoms piece by piece! This shit has to stop!

1) make shit extreme law

2) negotiate away the most extreme position (no family exemption in this case)

3) pass shit extreme law as "compromise"

4) bring back extreme position 5 years later as "common sense"

rinse and repeat. hell, we are only 100 years into the worst of it and look how much we've lost!

That did not last very long, as the cheerleaders fought that tooth and nail and won. They claimed area under the football bleachers were rightly theirs and had historical significance throughout the land as the spot to give BJ's during lunch and after school.

exactly what I was trying to help Harry understand about compromise... start extreme like "pay me $10k" and negotiate down to what is really wanted... because "compromise".

where's that cake meme?

Pretty sure I learned to shoot a single shot .22 in Boy Scouts, much before that age. No parents or guardians at all, I guess that will be done unless they've already sissified scouting to not include guns anymore? :(

This proposed law is stupid. Think about all the children that would be saved if they knew about firearms and understood what they can do at a young age so if they come across a gun the don't just pick it up and shoot themselves or their siblings/friends. That is probably one of the best counter arguments to this proposal.

Sad. I was taught gun safety at age 5 and was up on top of the garage killing whistle pigs with my brother by age 7.

Too bad valid arguments are invalidated when feelings and emotions are involved.

As a Junior shooting competition. I used to shoot smallbore league matches, some of the shooting ranges was at public high schools. We would shoot under the gymnasium.

in 7th grade for WW2 history I brought in an M1 garand and carbine to school for my history teacher. Who also in his past life was an ex military something and saluted president Kennedy as he would exit the helicopter or something, fuck i dont remember was a long time ago..... anyways... times sure are changing.
