I'm redoing the main bathroom in my 1950s house. I already tore out at least 3 previous layers of flooring and rotten patches, down to the diagonal 3/4 T&G. I screwed that down to the joists (it's all cupped and shrunken), then went over it with 3/4 T&G ply.

The questions(s): should I paint the ply with Kilz or Zinsser against eventual leaks? Maybe overthinking it, but leaks happen.

I've already got a steel/porcelain tub and plastic direct to stud surround, greenboard for above the surround, and FRP for the shower ceiling and above the surround. I know, truckstop ugly, but IDGAF. Waterproof.

The floor gets vinyl sheet. Seamless and easy. Done is better than perfect.

Also, what to spackle the screw holes with? Or forget them?

Sure, roll killz on there until you get bored and use some spackle to skim over the screws, or silicone, whatever :flipoff2: just don't make then little bumps

You'll need something like Levelastic for the floor if your putting the linoleum on it, otherwise screw divots will show.
Probably have something better these days, last linoleum I helped put down was probably 25 years ago.

The pebble grain FRP sucks to clean. It's what is in the work bathroom and never looks clean. I swear it static charges and attracts dirt, toilet paper bits, pubes, turd fragments

Imo if available luxury vinyl is a superior product to straight vinyl and looks better. Just make sure to caulk the trim and it will be waterproof and removable if needed in the future.

You’re overthinking a lot of it, standard surround and a good latex paint will make the walls waterproof as long as you don’t spray them consistently.

Most leaks and rot are at drains or seem around the tub in my experience in a few hundred bathrooms.

vinyl is waterproof, you don't need to waterproof it
I never did fill holes , made sure everything was flat and clean and sent it with adhesive

I did redgaurd around the toilet and outside the shower cause I had a half bucket leftover.

put blocking where stuff will be hung on the wall ( towel bar, toilet paper holder)

Tearing out layers of flooring and dealing with rotten patches is a pain, but it sounds like you’re on the right track with securing the T&G and putting down new plywood. It’s hard to believe how some older homes can get so messed up over the years. When we did our bathroom remodel and added an ADU, we ran into similar issues. It felt like we were digging forever, but getting that solid base made a huge difference. If you’re planning on putting something nice over that plywood, just make sure it can handle the moisture. Otherwise, you’ll end up in the same boat with rot down the line.

I’d put whatever you decide on right over the ply. Should last another 70 years

Its a bathroom not a submarine

The way overkill waterproofing trends are getting out of hand these days

Props to the op for keeping it simple with the prefab surround.

I just put a new floor down in mine. The old subfloor wasn't painted and it was doing fine, I wondered the same thing but left it like it was.

I thought this was about a bathroom in reno Nevada
