Ok so I got a D50 TTB front on my prerunner. I installed a Yukon duragrip so it'll have a limited slip up front. Doing this has eliminated the C clip that holds passenger axle in. Without the c clip you have to run a spring inside the pass slip axle to keep it seated into the diff. Now I got a more extreme TTB front end in my prerunner and the length of the spring prevents the axle from having around 4" of travel at droop since the spring bottoms out. Has anyone seen a way to do an external retaining system for that axle? I can machine the stub to press a bearing or ring on. Thanks.

On my diff, if drill a 3/8-24 in the end off the stub axles. They on my a washer for the end and bolted in on the the axle to hold it in.

Is there enough room to get in to do it? Other than that, going back to the 80-81 D44 is the only way one with a bolt in stub axle.

The 80-82 looks like the are bolt on for the D50 also.

Major Design Changes for 1980-1997 Ford Dana 50 Front Axles and the approximate years used:

  1. 1980-1982 Right Differential Output Shaft retained by 3 Bolt Thrust Plate
  2. 1983-1997 Right Differential Output Shaft retained by Snap Ring on inboard end
  3. 1980-1985 Brake Caliper Assemblies retained by single slide and tension spring at lower end
  4. 1986-1994 Brake Caliper Assemblies retained by 2 Rubber Isolated Brake Caliper Pins per side
  5. 1995-1997 Brake Caliper Assemblies Attach to Steering Knuckle with 2 Bolts
  6. 1980-1985.5 Years Dana 50IFS Axle used in F350

Looks like I need to find a unicorn 1980-82 D50 TTB diff

Those are scares. I had also considered modding a later housing with a bearing retainer plate and a snap ring groove on the axle. Not sure how much side loading that ball bearing would take though.

What's the collapsed height of the current spring and what's the free length? Could some kind of beehive spring that collapses into itself be sourced somewhere to fit that application?

Any way to mill/drill the pass side shaft deeper to accept the collapsed height of your current spring? If that's an option you can probably just stretch the current spring to make up the gap.

It's this spring that I cut down to 7" long. McMaster-Carr

Not sure on compressed length BUT i'm going to guess it's around 1.25-1.5" Long. This issue is making me kick myself for installing a duragrip up front and eliminating c clip. It's for my go fast prerunner so I'm sure an open diff wouldve been fine up front, but already had the gears all setup with everything new and the duragrip.

Does anyone know of a long spring, light rate, that is a 1.5-1.625" ID? Can do an external spring and eliminate the spring bind issue I'm having.

Tru-trac bro!

Or haven't you been listening all these years:lmao:

I havn't heard of any limited slip type setup that retains inner C-Clips. Do tru-trac do that?
The 8.8 one I'm using does. Not sure on the 44. I had the bolt in stub third on the Barge so I never checked.

Have you looked at McMaster-Carr? They had a pretty good selection last time I needed an obscure spring

I don't see a tru trac available for the Dana 50. Yeah checked McMaster and nothing large and long enough. May just untwist to open up the ID on the spring I have to get that to possibly work.
