Good riddance if the allegations are true

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A former U.S. Olympics gymnastics coach with ties to disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar killed himself Thursday, hours after being charged with turning his Michigan gym into a hub of human trafficking by coercing girls to train and then abusing them, authorities said.

John Geddert was supposed to appear in an Eaton County court, near Lansing. His body was found at a rest area along Interstate 96, according to state police. No other details were immediately released.

"This is a tragic end to a tragic story for everyone involved," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said.

Nessel earlier announced that Geddert was charged with two dozen crimes, including sexual assault, human trafficking and running a criminal enterprise. The charges were the latest fallout from the sexual abuse scandal involving Nassar, a former Michigan State University sports doctor now in prison.

Geddert, 63, was head coach of the 2012 U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team, which won a gold medal. He was long associated with Nassar, who was the Olympic team’s doctor and also treated injured gymnasts at Twistars, Geddert’s Lansing-area gym.

Among the charges, Geddert was accused of lying to investigators in 2016 when he denied ever hearing complaints about Nassar. But the bulk of the case against him involved his gym in Dimondale and how he treated the young athletes whose families paid to have them train under him.

The charges against Geddert had “very little to do” with Nassar, said Assistant Attorney General Danielle Hagaman-Clark.

Geddert was charged with using his strong reputation in gymnastics to commit a form of human trafficking by making money through the forced labor of young athletes.

“The victims suffer from disordered eating,” Nessel said, “including bulimia and anorexia, suicide attempts and attempts at self harm, excessive physical conditioning, repeatedly being forced to perform even when injured, extreme emotional abuse and physical abuse, including sexual assault.

“Many of these victims still carry these scars from this behavior to this day,” the attorney general said.

Nessel acknowledged that the case might not fit the common understanding of human trafficking.

“We think of it predominantly as affecting people of color or those without means to protect themselves ... but honestly it can happen to anyone, anywhere,” she said. “Young impressionable women may at times be vulnerable and open to trafficking crimes, regardless of their stature in the community or the financial well-being of their families.”

Geddert was suspended by Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics during the Nassar scandal. He told families in 2018 that he was retiring.

Why is everything labeled trafficking?

Sounds like sexual assault, without kidnapping and transporting and whoring anyone out.

Aside from the sexual assault, everything else is stuff I would expect from the kind of people that are chasing an Olympic dream in probably the most competitive sport there is. If they got through it without an eating disorder I would be amazed.

“excessive physical conditioning, repeatedly being forced to perform even when injured, extreme emotional abuse and physical abuse,”

How do you get to be the best if you don’t get exposed to these on at least some level? You cannot live a normal life, and be an elite athlete.

what Im wondering is, how did he exploit the girls.. did he get them to volunteer somewhere??

Really? "Well if you did this, I'd consider you for a spot on the team" takes on a whole new meaning.

What Nasser did was pretty damn bad. If the girls complained to him and he did nothing, screw him. That is the bad part if this.

Look at an olymipic training routine in most of their sports, then look at the age of the kids doing it... those charges probably scared all the coaches because its why we get more golds than anyone else.

I have had coaches that used this as a motto "excessive physical conditioning, repeatedly being forced to perform even when injured, extreme emotional abuse and physical abuse"

Everyone should get a medal:laughing:

I was wondering the same thing but its hard to tell without seeing any of the charging docs. Just a guess but a lot of the girls are probably from out of state. With his MO it could be said that he brought them in to MI from across state lines with the intent to molest, or assault. Hence the trafficking charge. Basically they were stacking any possible applicable charge to force a plea deal. Looks like he took his own deal. Or someones daddy did it for him.

Just reread the article. Theyre saying it was because he was making money from the forced labor of the young athletes. Sounds like a stretch but a talented investigator or prosecuter could make it work.

All the extra charges seem like a damn good way to kill Americas gymnastics team. I think everyone agrees that sexual assault is bad, but the rest seems like standard hard coaching by someone who demands perfection. I was in a restaurant while they were playing some NCAA gymnastic competition. It was a train wreck compared to the Olympics. It was under 5 tee ball compared to the MLB bad. If the private coaches stop training them, that is what we will be sending to face China and Russia.

You expect the prosecutor to have any regard for the wider impact of their actions?

Monkey see book, monkey throw book, that's how those morons operate.

pedophiles are sick sombitches. I am not sorry he is dead.

I don't get sports AT ALL.

You say "If the private coaches stop training them, that is what we will be sending to face China and Russia." My answer is ...SO???

Edit: read the charging documents: https://beta.documentcloud.org/documents/20491746-john-geddert-criminal-complaint
All in favor of charging him for sexual assault of a minor and human trafficking if he did indeed do that.
No so much on charging him with human trafficking for being a demanding coach who pushed olympic level athletes to do the best that they are physically able to do because the athletes came from across state lines.
That part seems like prosecutorial overreach to me.

I'm not sorry either, but this isn't good.

This guy painlessly went to sleep forever. No suffering, no dealing with consequences, all by his own choice. "Oops! My bad!" :turns_main_breaker_off:

In a perfect world he'd get some Law Abiding Citizen type stuff.

True, but his suffering doesn't mean shit once he's dead.

If him, dead, is the goal; I see quick & cheap as a win.

EDIT: if you still need a pound of flesh, pay tweekers 50 bucks to fuck his corpse into hamburger.

I had a couple that wore that on a t-shirt!

Jeebus, we ran gassers till we puked, then 5 more other drills on an empty stomach. If you didn't like it maybe archery was for you...

You have to build the WILL to win as much as the body. Yes, it can give you scars the rest of your days. But Glory is forever!

All that said FAWK this guy. If he did these things to the children in his charge he got off easy. There is a difference between training hard and abuse.
