My engine bay is very tight, literally just a few inches around the block. So I need to move the oil filter and cooler (came stock on this motor) towards the rear. At what point does the length of the oil lines become too great for the mechanical pump to move oil? I plan to install a bypass close to the block where the oil lines exit the block. I haven’t picked a spot for the filter or cooler, but say I put them 3’, 5’ or 8’ away from the block ….. at what length does the distance become a possible flow risk because mechanical pump can’t push the oil through the lines? Just under the green circle is where the oil filter typically is and the oil cooler is about 2’ away by hose length.

I’m thinking about how the longer the straw the harder it is to drink from lol. Am I overthinking this?

It's not sucking it's pushing.

Keep it under 10ft of total hose and you'll be fine.

Use high quality hoses / fittings, your engine depends on it.

If you are sucking thru a longer straw increase the ID to make it easier to pull or push.

I would just mount the remote adapter further forward on the engine where you have clearance and then run hard line to it. Exceed the ID of the oil filter nipple and you'll be fine.

Mine are under the rear light bar bar.

AN10 lines.

My engine produces 60 psi of pressure.

Any idea on the flow rate?

10gpm would ideally use 1/2" hose. -8 JIC

I can't remember the formula to factor in length. Unless there's a bunch of fittings, 10-15ft usually is ok, least in the hydraulic world.

I ran -8 to and from cooler in frontnof radiator, T400 attached to a BBC M1028 CUCV.

Had approximately 20 ft run out and return to T400, didnt use the radiators ATF cooler as lost a 2500.00 T400 year before and learned my lesson that radiator rebuilder dont pay attention to the oil and ATF coolers in the end tanks.

In that application the -8 kept the ATF cool with a thermostat fan on the cooler.

Do AN10. That's the standard for oil cooling.

After thinking about this more, is there a way to do the math to compare the cooling rate of an oil cooler near the engine or the cooling factor from 10’ of aluminum line out to a filter in the rear and another 10’ back to the block?!?

Just comparing surface areas. IMO 10' of tube won't be much area compared to a cooler.
