Off-grid cabin discussion

My fiancé and I have been looking to go off grid as well. I was born in TN and grew up in PA. We have spent the last year going to different states for long weekends and staying in cabins to find a place we like. I still have family in PA and land is cheap so, that remains attractive. WV is pretty decent with being able to buy land with free Natural Gas for life. We Recently went to Great Smokey Mtns and decided that their mountains are just too damned steep. It is like they carve out a super steep driveway (read as shit you ain't driving down in the snow or ice) and just make enough room for a house. No yard, no parking, you fall off the porch and your are hosed. Last weekend we were in Shenandoah, VA. Really liked the small towns and rolling hills with mountain lines, Can kill all the deer you want. Actually very attractive considering it is in VA. Only hard part is finding a large acre tract .

I have a 16x20 shack I bought in 1993, on 8 acres with a creek running through the middle , bordering the national forest on two sides , that I bought in 1992 .

I wouldnt have bought it if had overhead power , since the electric provider cuts a 50 foot wide right of way for the power line .

Would love some more photos of the cabin and a floor plan. I am looking at property myself and plan to build a cabin on it.

This technology being in just about everyone's hands is right around the corner...

This technology keeps inching closer. I recently got a Pixel 9 Pro and was at my off-grid cabin yesterday. The phone has a "satellite demo mode" that lets you test the satellite connectivity. The cabin is in a hollow surrounded by mountains and forest with a very narrow path to the sky and the phone had no trouble linking up and sending and receiving messages. Right now it is for emergency use only, but word is two way texting is on the horizon. The phone comes with 2 years of emergency service for free. My 83 year old Dad was impressed and wants to upgrade his phone.
