Off-grid cabin discussion

Well I’m glad that everyone will now be talking about the boob in this thread instead of the cabin.

So for you peeps out there...

What would be the monitory cut off point for you when it comes to paying to hook up to the grid?

example: cost of off grid stuff > cost of grid hook up + ten years

$20k

I pretty well got my questions answered. Let's see some more Irate off-grid setups.

My family has a couple summer cabins up in interior BC on a big lake that were originally built back in the early 70's. They are about 40 miles from the nearest gas station/small store and 250 miles from the nearest proper 'town'. Both have propane fridges, stoves, and heaters. Not a place we visit in the winter as it can be pretty brutal, regularly -20 with 3-4ft of snow. The lake usually freezes up around the 1st of December and thaws the 1st of May.

My great-grandpa originally went up there in the early 50's Moose hunting and fell in love with the place. He originally had this really cool FC but later upgraded to an equally as cool Suburban. That boat that is on top of the FC is still up there at the cabins.

Lake is 8 miles long and 3 miles wide; 330ft at the deepest point. Mostly spring fed with a few glacier streams feeding it as well. Water is tested several times a year and always comes back potable.

Evernoob you picked the wrong thread to make your point. OP in no way implied that he was into the survivalist game only that he wanted to be self sufficient and see what others have done. I think it would be cool to be self sufficient and off the grid and not beholden to utility companies. Find another thread to make your point and find a different way than your initial post which was asinine.

OP I think your place and property is awesome and if it was mine I would be looking at water power rather than solar. as I think solar is a constant money pit and headache with way too many life limited parts.

Back in my day, saying 'Off-grid cabin' was an oxymoron.

Also that's not a cabin, it's a cottage, and it is the Mall Jeep of cottages. In my book you don't get to say 'cabin' when you have a cute little stone house on your second property. You can buy your way into that horseshit but since I don't need your tip or consideration, I'll do you the favor of informing you that so far, you are a complete poser.

Look, you have a nice little second house with all kinds of neat gadgets. That's a spending hobby. You have too much money and you need to spend it on things that entertain you. What I don't like is you could have done that shit at home with RC cars or maybe your SBC A-model. Why did you have to take up woods space from a rightful and deserving Outdoorsman such as myself and many, many other people that I know?

The only upshot of your type is that when your credit card can't buy your way out of trouble with that starving Survivor, your stores of food, gadgets, and ammunition will make nice additions to my stockpile after all you prepper and off-grid people are dead.

Since you're being such a bitch, tell us what an outdoorsman you are.

Have you ever hunted? Give details.

What does your best annual fishing trip look like?

Do you grow a garden that you harvest any type of food?

What craftsmanship do you do outside of work? Carpentry, fab work of any kind.

Give us details you mouthy fuck.

Edit...

What guns are in your safe?

Oh wait....

you're a dumb shit who thinks he knows more than he does. I think I'm the only one here that can actually confirm where and what type of place that is. his family has done well in life and made smart decisions. they were able to buy some land many many years ago and they built the place. It's not in the middle of BFE but it's far enough away to enjoy the solitude that the woods offers. He can get to town in 15 minutes or so. He's not looking to survive out there with fucking gadgets. He's looking to make his life a little easier so he can enjoy what his family has when he goes. I've got the same damn thing in NC. Granted my place isn't as vast but I've got land and a place to sleep and woods to stomp around in. When I go there I'm looking to relax and not have to lug a bunch of shit beyond beer and food. His place doesn't have electricity. Neither does mine. I went the route of solar and batteries just like he's asking about. How about next time, you STFU and sit one out while the adults have the discussion.

Wow. I've had Ever**** on ignore so long I forgot about him until he was quoted in this thread. Now I remember why I put him there. I think he must be unhappy with his life or something. The problem with the term off-grid is that it has the prepper tinfoil fan boy connotation now thanks to the internet. To me it is just a statement of fact.

And sup McCracken

I'm still hoping he suck starts a shotgun. he has been on my ignore from the get go.

Safe? Freedom pile.
Actually, that makes me interested in what kind of safe you'd put in a 5th wheel camper. Empty space next to the water tank inaccessable from the outside would be good enough in my mind.

Amen. Fucking neckbeards

I dunno about that, solar shit is pretty much solid-state where any sort of water powered generator has moving parts and screens that'll catch every twig and leaf in a ten mile radius.

Unless one of those springs mentioned in the ram pump discussion has enough pressure to spin a little permanent magnet motor. That'd be pretty cool. I keep getting my mind stuck on surface water for hydroelectric...

This is the exact type of place I'd want to retire to.

I'm pretty sure anyone that knows you will be coming for your stuff first...with no fucks given.

A buddy has a cabin near Mt. Lassen and there is an artesian spring farther up the hillside and that water dumps into a 55g poly barrel and then continues on down to the cabin via 3" PVC. Provides plenty of water pressure for showers and keeping the deadfall damp, (super high fire risk in those parts). There is a 250g propane tank for water heater, fridge, cooking and some lamps. If we want tunes by the outside kitchen or fire pit we bring a 1000w Honda generator that will last all night on a few gallons of gasoline. Electricity is absolutely not necessary, IMO.

Debbils advocate- Couldn't you do home made 1kw solar for around the same price as the little whisper Honda? And then have 110v on demand without dealing with using a generator?

Apparently it is if you have to fire up the generator. :stirthepot:

Well since you can't seem to read between the lines, I guess I 'll have to clarify it for you. The cabin itself, since that's what we're talking about here doesn't require electricity.

Probably, in some situations, but not at this particular place. As I mentioned it's built on a hillside and there's lots of trees that can't be cut down due to the proximity to Lassen NP, so probably not enough sun exposure for it to work. The other thing is that it's snowed in for up to 6 months of the year, so there'd be no access for maintenance, it's just easier to pack up the little gennie after closing it down before the snows.

My brother and I bought this place in August. Coming in gate maybe 15 flat, It runs down left side of Otter creek for about 4300ft. We are putting up a shed to replace the barn that fell. The yard tractor belongs to a fellow that was helping. Not sure how he got it across creek. Place had a house at some point, gone now. The electric line was still there, just got power to a temp a couple weeks ago. Creek and crossing train tracks present some challenges. I intend to construct a primitive cabin up on hillside somewhere.

Gotcha. I'm thinking inside my little ark-la-tex flat land bubble- cut them trees down over there, snow is some bullshit you see on TV etc.

Forgot about this thread. Can't even remember if I posted in it lol. Love the place and the ride.

My neighbor behind me who has a access easement through my property for his driveway is completely off grid (would be a long run of power line and he would have to renegotiate with me running power through my property) They live there full time. Only issues he has is batteries getting to cold when its -30c to -40c and then his generator has to kick in a lot more often and that's when its darkest in December and January starting in February it runs less and less and by spring it doesn't fire up at all even with -10-15c nights.

He's building a new better insulated shed for the batteries which he hopes will solve that issue.

I'll be starting my 20'x20' cabin sometime next summer. The plan is to buy a new Woodlands mill this spring to mill the logs with. All the wood will be coming from the area the cabin is being built. I'm picking up a boat trailer after Christmas to build a log dolly out of.

Between now and getting the mill I'll be clearing and pouring piers and gathering items.

It's something I've always wanted to do and should have done a long time ago.

Wish me luck...

edit: Oh, and I'm open to any advise anyone has.
