I have BT ones that work with Torque App. Fine for really basic and clearing codes.

I see Amazon/HF Etc has ones that are supposed to be much better. Anyone use a not Snap-On/MAC etc that is decent? I wont use it a ton, but reading modules seems good, and more than a BT dongle. Couple hundred $$?

Go.

I've got a foxwell one that works well. It does basic odb2 but it can be loaded with whatever maker you need. It came with 1 free manufacturers file set.

I have a HF scanner that does everything I need it to do on our vehicles. I also have an outdated OTC scanner that was top of the line 10-12yrs ago and the HF scanner is just as capable as that is. Hell, the OTC won't even connect to anything new even using the generic OBD program.

Autel MP808 if you want a do everything scanner for various models. If you want specific brands, look for brand specific dongles like VCDS and AlfaOBD. Both are exceptionally better than what you can get in standard scanners for their respective brands.

You remind me, I do have the Autel for Mercedes stuff

Its a Genesis.
I had to send mine in for service, so it would connect to the "server" they also replaced the battery (that didn't work correctly from the beginning) it was about $450. Then I had to spend another $150 to get it up to date (2024 vehicles) but all support is ending in October, the scanner will still work but no more updates.

If you are interested in getting yours updated I'd do it now. They are also offering a $500 credit towards a new machine, but they are in the $4-5k range.

Edit Sorry, mine is an Encore.

I use it on my 97 F250 on occasion to look at engine data and that's about it.

I'm pretty sure I'm way off on it being 10-12yrs old and it's been more like 15-20yrs since I bought it. Apparently they are all but useless these days accordingto the prices on Ebay. I think I paid $5500 for mine with all the American, Jap and European software and cabling thst I needed when I opened my own shop.

Fuck I'm old.... :emb4:

If you have a car newer than 2013ish, and want to do your own diagnosis, a bidirectional scan tool is worth it.
I bought an XTool D8 a couple years ago for $600 and it has been well worth the price.

I was able to reprogram my 2013 Infiniti to auto unlock when put in park, set the air suspension level, and put the ECM/TCM into learn mode. Those alone paid for itself. I should have bought it before I got a second key because I think it can do that too.
I was able to calibrate the steering sensor on my parents 2017 Subaru and help diagnose a bad SRS module in a 2010 Kia that the dealer wanted to replace the entire wire harness on (that wouldn't have even fixed the problem).

king bolen lets me do stuff with the POS Jeep and the red lightning bolt....
i also used it on a 2006 Scion XB and a 2013 Dodge Avenger.

bidirectional ability is nice

under $350 on Amazon

I am seeing a lot of the amazon ones with subscriptions, that seems dumb (autel a lot but others too)....
