Same. We had family in NJ and visited NYC frequently in the summers. I remember it being mostly a shithole and wondering why people enjoyed living like that.
We lived in CT and my dad worked at MetLife. We went to the city fairly regularly when it was at its grimiest. They really clearned it up in the 90s, I think.

I remember as a kid in the 80s driving past dozens of stripped cars in and around the Bronx. They were everywhere
It was in the 50s and 60s, too. I still remember a decent '55 Chevy on Ludlow street about two blocks down from Houston.

Also, umm, repurposing '61 Cadillac parts from one on the Belt Parkway near the Narrows and another in Dyker Heights.

I remember thinking as a kid that there were probably enough parts on those cars to make a complete car or 2.

One day in the 60s I needed to be driving back and forth a bunch to Queens from Bklyn on the BQE.

First trip out, saw a new Camaro on the side of the road. On the return trip an hour later it was on blocks and the wheels and tires were gone. Made aboout 6 round trips that day; every time more and more of that car was gone.

By the end of the day there was not much of it left. And this was in a nice area, right down by Ft Hamilton.
