np435 in a '70 highboy

the transmission shifts fine but the shifter has a lot of rotational play. in any gear or neutral I can move the whole shift lever in an arc about 12". I replaced the cup and spring last year so those are tight. the actual issue is that the groves in the ball are wallered and the trunnions in the side of the shift tower are worn and also loose in how they sit in the hole in either side of the shift tower.

any suggestions for replacement parts or how to fix these? drill and tap and replace with bolts? I'm at work now and can get pics later if needed

Probably source a new 435 be easier.

a whole new trans to fix my shifter?
I'd file the slots flat then make new oversize pins
just really small round stock? someone on a ford forum said he used the chuck end of a drill bit that was slightly larger than the stock ones. I like that idea because free

good idea on the filing

you can get hardened pins for like injection molding dies and shit, I forget the exact words to use, but something like 'hardened and ground pins' oughta get you close
get a reamer .001" undersize and hammer them in there

Yeah, then you could replace all those parts. I doubt they still make that stuff. I can't imagine a used 2wd unit being more than a $100

Used 2wd 435 goes for stupid money around here and likely to have the same issues. Might be different in OP’s area though.

I like the oversized pin idea. Freeze them the night before so they press in easier.

looks like a "leader pin" is exactly what is needed as it has the flange on the end. even a clevis pin might work if I can find one close enough in size

none on marketplace around here and even if so, seems time and cost prohibitive

you don't need the flange, it isn't going to fall in, if it gets loose it'll fall out

T19, but same/same. Bottom of post 35 and post 42 are where the shifter work are

Here ya go, $50

ford dealer sells that same .25x.625 pin as a crankshaft dowel pin, but I'm going to go home and take measurements before buying anything

What I didn't include apparently was that I did wind up throwing some shim stock around the dowel pin, in the trans case hole. That snugged it right up, and left enough of a tail that the threads on the cap capture it.

Let me know what you find, I probably have another pin in my box, and I have plenty of shim stock, can send some your way.

I've built up a small amount of weld on the grooves and then re-ground them back to where the pin just fits... talking like a couple tacks.
Didn't take much on the trans I was working on. It was a T18 though, so only one pin.
