Critics of President Joe Biden took aim at him as a mere placeholder to get President Donald Trump out of the White House – a self-described "transition candidate."

Now, some will see reinforcement of that notion as the commander in waiting, Vice President Kamala Harris, is taking charge of a key presidential task.

Harris has taken on the customary presidential role of calling heads of state, The Epoch Times reported Tuesday.

Harris spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, according to a White House readout that did not mention President Biden, per the report.

Although Biden, 78, did speak with Macron on Jan. 24, it is rare for a president to step aside for vice presidents to make the calls with world leaders.

"Vice President Kamala Harris has begun to take calls on behalf of President Joe Biden, raising questions about his ability to do the job of president," The National Pulse reported. "It is bizarre for a vice president to be making contact with key world leaders just weeks into a new administration."

According to the White House readout, per reports:
  • Harris "expressed her commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between the United States and France and to revitalizing the transatlantic alliance."
  • Harris and Macron "agreed on the need for close bilateral and multilateral cooperation to address COVID-19, climate change, and support democracy at home and around the world."
  • And they "discussed numerous regional challenges, including those in the Middle East and Africa, and the need to confront them together."
Harris tweeted:
"Today I spoke with President @EmmanuelMacron of France. We discussed COVID-19, climate change, supporting democracy at home and around the world, and regional challenges. @POTUS and I look forward to working with President Macron to build a better future for our two countries."​

Harris also made a call to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this month, after Biden spoke with him Jan. 22, per the Times.

"The prime minister congratulated the vice president on her historic election, and she recalled fondly her years spent in Montréal," Trudeau's office said, per the report.

Biden entered the White House as the oldest president in U.S. history.

And critics are seizing on Harris' newfound importance, particularly after former Vice President Mike Pence did not have the same authority on making calls with world leaders.

I figured out last night that they won't have Biden meet with a fluent English-speaker head of state. He has no problem working from a script with someone like Putin because he will work through a translator. No translator, well, Harris gets the call. This is all about to hit the fan because Israel and a couple other are getting pissed off about it and they will make a stink about it. The media here certainly won't.

israel will make a stink if daddy USA stops giving them money to buy our weapons.

other than that I don't think they actually give a flying fuck about what goes on here.

They would care if this admin started to favor the Palestinians in terms of policy decisions. With this crowd.... I'd be worried. They seem to be going down the list of things Trump supported and flippping the switch to the opposite pole.

do not underestimate the power of the military industrial complex to sway those policy decisions.

There's a lot of money made in selling our weapons.
