Newish car insurance rates

Even when I owned dirt bikes worth more than my car, I didn't carry insurance on them

More for theft than anything else. A good bike start at $8k an goes up.

Pretty easy to pop the straps and roll the bitch outta the pickup when its parked somewhere. Know of a guy that had that happen while he was inside getting xrays:mad3:

Reasons to not live in Portland :homer:

Took a while, but I'm much happier owning old shit that I can leave the keys in anywhere instead of new stuff with them sorts of issues

Theft, roll the trailer on the 6 hour drive to trails, flip it going 100 across a lake, etc.
my sled was $17k and my daughters was $9k. More than I want to pay out of pocket to replace.

Hartford, He said that included a good student discount.

Maybe I misspoke to the guy, is there a difference if me or my kid actually owns the car? He has a learners permit and is covered on all my junk now I think, he wont actually be 16 for a couple more weeks.
Im not too familiar with hartford, no difference if he owns it vs you.

Ya as a permitted driver I think there is 6 months of no rating, then you need to prove he still has his permit or he gets rated as a driver, this is from memory as its been a few years sign I was on the selling side of insurance.

and yes everyone on your policy will be covered for each vehicle.

What a racket. Maybe I need to look into self insured and cover that with an umbrella policy? Im not really sure how to even get started with that.

Kids a straight A student with AP classes, he plays high school football, baseball, basketball, weight training ect ect. Hes a grumpy asshole at times but has never been in trouble. Id think a company would want to lock in a kid like that early in life by treating him fair. Clown world I guess.

Ya it sucks. Im not sure if you can self insure plus umbrella. Self insure is a bond, so I think you would just get a larger bond. But with self insurance there is nothing for you/your vehicles.

My background was working under the largest producer(seller) of insurance for a big name company for a couple years. Lots of wealthy people. I never sold or even had to look into self insure except to pass the license test. There would be 16 year old kids getting rated on brand new $100k cars. Sometimes it was actually cheaper to buy some shit box civic or something and have the kid rated on that. Does Hartford have actual agents? or do you have a broker? Or is it just an 800 number? Call and ask for options to help reduce the premium. And specifically ask if you can choose which vehicle the kid is rated on. Any agent worth the price of premium should be able to make some moves and find saving here or there.

You might be able to get one of those readers that plugs into the OBD port and sends the speed acceleration etc to the company for a more personalized rate. But then that vehicle would actually have to be driven nicely :lmao:

Insurance is a bet so to speak. If you feel confident in your kid and dont have a loan on the car you could also remove comp/collision and other optional coverages.

I still don't understand why people let their credit score drop so they can be fucked at every turn. If you're NOT using credit today because you can afford your life it's really easy to get an 800+ about and save on everything. Get 30k+ on a CC credit line, buy groceries on the card and pay it off. Don't actually use but 2k of the 30 ever and pay it off every other week.
Do this for a few years.
Get an 800+
I've never had credit so I get punished for a "no hit" score. To get a card in your mid 30s takes buying a secured line of credit. One of my banks that I've had a debit card with for 20 years sends me card apps but won't approve because I have no history... It's a different department and having accounts with consistent positive balances in them means nothing to them.

I really need to bite the bullet and spend some money to use my own money to start a credit score because my auto insurance fucks me for $200 extra a year for having no score. $800 a year for liability instead of the $600 initial quote before they run a credit check.

Nobody gives a fuck about your kids sportsketball or straight As. It’s the fact that his age group accounts for the most amount of car accidents.

You can start with dumb stuff like a home depot card, use it a little every month and just keep paying it as if you were paying cash, but it'll report activity to the credit bureaus. Get a bit of history with that and then go for a bigger name issuer.

No history can end up really inconvenient, I found out in my early 40's that a paid-off vehicle, a paid-off house, and a corporate Amex with no late payments, didn't equal a good credit history, it equalled a ghost. I applied for a Costco Visa and was denied because of insufficient history. I didn't "need" the card, but did need a new dishwasher, and "put it on your Costco card and get a $100 rebate" seemed like a better deal than just paying cash.

Actually they do, see above posted by a guy who used to do something with insurance and said to ask about “good student discount” :flipoff2:
