Son in Law built a carpet cleaning rig, and whoever built his main machine shipped him a 50 gallon baffled stainless tank that he didn’t order or need. Roughly 18x24x48. The only fittings are 2 bungs on the side, like I would use to run a tube to show how much is in it. Trying to decide what to do with it. I’d love to put it in my truck, as it only has a ~24 gallon diesel tank. I am already rocking the grandpa canopy and decked drawers, so my bed is kinda worthless for hauling much. Also diesel was $1.50 less in Idaho last weekend from these crazies in WA. Wouldn’t mind tankering some fuel when I go to my property there.

I need a filler neck and maybe a transfer pump and plumbing to tee into the stock tank, maybe just as an on demand transfer.

Also thought about having a filler hose so I could fuel other things, tractor, skid steer, generator, etc., which would be super handy.

I’ve also thought about putting a drain so I could get all the diesel out and tanker some unleaded if I need a significant quantity. I’ve had people try to tell me that you can’t change fuel types in a tank, but I think that is more of brain dead people repeating what they heard. A little diesel prob wouldn’t be great in a gasser, built a little gas in the diesel won’t hurt nothing.

Should I try to find a bolt on or weld on filler? Have everything to weld stainless, but never have.

I think a little external wobble pump would be simplest, and loop the 2 bungs for a fuel level indicator or is there an all in one unit that I could cut a hole and drop it in?

I assume you are going to lay it sideways.

Level indicator.

There's kinda 2 schools of thought on the pump process, you could get a little $20 micro pump and a t fitting for your trucks filler neck and put it on a toggle switch on the dash to transfer while running down the road. Beware, many a weary traveler has transferred 50 gallons into their 25 gallon tank:laughing:

Or get $1-200 worth of fuel nozzle and pump to pull over and fill your tank with it, and be able to fill other trucks and equipment

*I've had good luck with the $20 Amazon micro pumps, but would buy an extra to keep behind the seat

I doubt that would hold up on a truck. They are made for stationary tanks.

Pic of the business end.

Truck is a 2014 F-250 with the 6.5' bed.

I THINK you can trigger this relay with your fuel gauge to activate a fuel pump to automatically fill your tank when it gets low and shut itself off when it is full using your sending unit.

Do your own research or whatever to figure it out, hopefully this post bugs you enough to pursue this route because it would be cool as shit:flipoff2:.

So the tank is 48” wide x 16” tall by 25” deep?

By some gold fish and add some water, portable aquarium ftw.

An Arduino and a relay could probably do that without a problem. Would want an override switch so when it won’t turn on or off it can manually be done. Wasn’t thinking of developing this that far, but just extra fuel when it’s cheap or far between.

I welded an engine oil pump into my transfer tank
I punched the drive shaft through a closely bored bung which will probably leak, I should have welded a 3/8" square drive onto it from a crappy socket, right below the filler neck to get at with an extension

drive it with the cordless drill and it moves fuel "fast enough"

Or cut a npt coupling in half.
woah woah woah
have you priced 2" couplings lately?

besides they are tapered where drum bungs are straight thread with a nice radius for the gasket
Maybe a conduit NPS coupling would be better. They're usually bevelled internally for an o-ring, and you could probably cut three bungs outta one, since they're straight threaded...
