New Ford Duallys are 6+ months out?

If you want a 7.3, I'd get it soon. DI and particulate filters coming, it looks like.

They (epa) have been threatening DI is a big polluter....
 
The 7.3 isn't direct injected so they should be fine. The old Ecoboost I had would puff black smoke if I was pulling hard with it. Btw I specified unloaded in my last post. When my truck is loaded it seems to pull harder than unloaded.
 
I'm so on the fence about a 7.3 / 4.30 combo to replace my 2019 6.7 /3.55.

The 19 is a weekend nice driver, with 48K on the odometer and as of 12 days ago no warranty coverage.

I'm not concerned about the 8-10K tractor and equipment trailer, but I am concerned about the 5th-wheel camper. Wet and loaded I'm just about 13,200 and pushing a lot of wind at 13' 5" high. I've managed to push that diesel into the 6.5-7MPG range running into a headwind coming back from Amarillo and unloaded it's never seen fit to do better than 16.5 so the fuel cost doesn't concern me, but I'd be plenty pissed if I have to push the pedal through the floor when I want to keep up with the rest of my camping buddies at 70-75 running across the state only to be only one that chose to break away from a diesel pickup and be sucking hind tit.

i wouldn't be worried at all. my current tow rig is a '13 w/ 6.2l and 4.30gears. i tow my 5th wheel (35ft xlr 2 axle) 10-15k mi a year and also run 70-75 most of the time. 22k lbs truck and trialer. add a bigger motor and a 10sp trans you'll be fine... but guys do seem to get emotional turn more rpm than the are used to in a diesel.

almost everywhere i go is with a f450/ 6.7 and he's around 27k truck and trailer (40+ ft 3axle momentum). he hates to drop below 70, he will leave me a bit on steep climbs, the last hills on i90 and hwy 20 passes in WA, but everywhere else we maintain same speed. also we get the same mileage fwiw.

the f450 is also deleted and chipped. i believe they have 430gears too. he has to let out of it on the passes too because oil temps get too high, i just lay my foot into it. i used to keep an eye on trans temps etc, etc. but never been an issue so i dont pay attention anymore.




i really like the 6.2l/4.30 combo. i bought it from the first owner, he was replacing it with a similar optioned 7.3l/ 430 and 10speed... i was very sure to let him know when he's ready to sell it, i'll buy it.

Even so, I almost think they might go DI and more compression on 6.8 to increase power some, and end 7.3, if Biden gets in again.

15-20 years ago any kind of tow rig thread mentioned adding oil or transmission coolers and then had two pages arguing over plumbing them in front of, behind, or bypassing the in-radiator cooler. Or putting the cooler in front of the condenser or behind the radiator. You don’t really see that anymore with the better cooling on modern trucks, even though they may have reached a point where they need them again.

Both of my 6.7 trucks have unloaded transmission temps that would have been "melt" on my previous transmission.
The oil temps on this truck are really high too, over 230*F on long climbs in the summer.

Yup, just driving on the highway I see 210-220° on the trans temps. Supposedly that is normal for the 10 speeds.
I remember the old saying was 100° over ambient
 
The Denali guy I talked about earlier still doesn't have the new AC line so we were talking about options and F450's.
I was telling him I don't see the need to pay MSRP anymore and that places like Granger were offering their 2% under deals again.
I found this breakdown of their sub 300 unit allocation.
It appears to me they (Ford,GM etc. ) are keeping high trim level trucks low.

Still really impressed with this 7.3 gasser.
Went to Surfside Beach SC last week for Thanksgiving. 725 miles roound trip, mostly interstate with some 55 mph highways mixed in. We galavanted around Myrtle and Murrell's Inlet 2 days. Hand calculated 15.7 MPG.
We prefer driving it over my wife's 21 Expedition on trips. With a waterproof 4'x4' luggage bag in the bed, it's a comfy traveler.
The seats are a huge improvement over the 2022 I had before. That wasn't a selling point, but it is something we both noticed a big improvement in.
 
386 mile Thanksgiving trip

8 mpg but I ran 70 most of the way instead of 65, I also locked out 10th because towing in the Hill Country in 10th sucks.
This was one regen included too.

Everyone gets 15-17 mpg while I get 11.5. My Cummings got 13. :homer:

Everyone gets 70,000 miles and a set of tires and mine are almost on the wear bars at 9,200.
As I put more miles on it, the mileage has improved. According to Ford Truck forums, this is about where it'll be. Good enough for me.
At 75 mph, it's turning 1500 RPM in 10th. That plays a big role obviously. On trips I use the Econ mode. Whether or not that plays a big role, who knows.
I was hopeful for 13ish on the highway.

You must drive aggressive as hell to wear out a set of tires that quickly.

Mpg largely depends on speed and traffic, lots of start stop 11mpg lots of backroads and highways 15mpg plus. I idle around at 1500 @75 as well, hook up a trailer and you are at 2k rpm at 70.

People on the FB groups are getting their ordered 2024 SD Fords as fast as 2 months. A lot in the 2-3 month range.

Seems to be the lower optioned trucks...starting to see lariat....

I ordered a KR diesel tremor on Aug 17th...no build date yet....another forum also shows that KR and limited diesel still waiting.... CW says 2nd build out so maybe spri g of 24

Up until I get a vin..I can change the order....giving a hard look at the 7.3.....

Currently towing with gas power wagon the last 3 yrs. kinda want back in diesel so I can run a 2nd tank.....I will also get ext warranty..and won't own a newer diesel out of warranty

15-17mpg in the 6.7 Ford is about right. Unloaded, even with the 4.30's, I'm getting hand calculated at about 16.5, with a regen in there.

Towing, even light, is a different story. 12.5-13 dragging the extremely light brick through the air at 68mph.

my 6.7 10-speed runs really hot.
new to me 7.3 10-speed runs about 20 degrees cooler. 🤷

My driving is mostly around town.

The greedy builders and developers threw a shitload of houses up around here in the last 20 years. The local government didn't stay ahead of the curve when it came to widening roads and traffic lights/roundabouts.

That means to take a left on a lot of roads you have to jump in a small gap. Imo, if you pull out in front of someone, they should not have to touch their brakes. Common courtesy.

Therefore, I'm taking a lot of holeshot launches to get across town.

I also did. 2,200 mile round trip pulling a trailer. That may have ate up some rubber. The front tires aren't as bad as the backs. I'm going to rotate them and try to stretch them out to 20,000 miles.
