Been picking up 10+ rovers a few times now. On my second one that needs severe engine work. Overheated so bad it melted a piston. N/A 5.0 from a sport.

Is that a broken ring or is that the ring-gaps lined up? If they lined up then that's been torched by the blowby hosing through there.

What do you think the root cause was of the overheating?

Put a low coolant alarm on my 300TDi so I'd have chance to stop before I cooked the engine.
