More stupidity from California (San Francisco)

ACalifornia Democrat introduced bill this week that would require automakers in the state to equip new vehicles with speed governors — devices that restrict how fast people can drive.

The technology, if passed under the legislation, would prevent California drivers from going 10 mph or more over the posted speed limit in any given area. The bill would mandate that cars and trucks of the 2027 model year or later that are manufactured or sold in California be installed with speed governors.

State senator Scott Wiener, a Democrat who represents San Francisco, introduced SB 961 on Wednesday to reduce the number of traffic deaths in the Bay Area and in California, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
“The tragic reality is that a lot of people are being severely injured or dying on our streets in San Francisco and throughout the country, and it’s getting worse,” Wiener told the Bay Area newspaper.

“We have speed limits, and they exist for a reason. And it’s perfectly reasonable to say you can’t travel more than 10 miles over the speed limit,” he added. “That’s what this bill will do. It’s very reasonable, and it’s an idea whose time has come.”

There were more than 4,400 motor-vehicle traffic fatalities in California in 2022, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. California was slightly behind Texas, which saw nearly 4,500 traffic deaths that year. The total number of traffic fatalities nationwide was 42,795, according to the NHTSA.

The National Safety Council reported that speeding played a role in 29 percent of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. in 2021.

Emergency vehicles, including ambulances and fire trucks, would be exempt from the speed-governor requirement. The California Highway Patrol, while not exempt, could obtain authorization from its commissioner to disable speed governors on their vehicles in certain circumstances, according to the bill.

“The commissioner may, in the commissioner’s discretion, authorize the disabling of an intelligent speed limiter system in any vehicle if, based on the specialized usage of the vehicle, the disabling of the system is reasonable, practical, and would not pose a risk to public safety,” the bill’s text reads.

The speed-governor requirement also states that trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds must be equipped with side guards. That would prevent cars or bikes from being pulled under a large truck in a crash.

Wiener introduced SB 961 as part of the larger SAFER California Streets legislative package, the other half of which requires the Golden State to make state-owned streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus riders. Under SB 960, the California Department of Transportation would be forced to improve the safety of such roads.

“Combined, SB 960 & 961 will make California roads safer for all users & lead to fewer injuries & deaths on our roads,” Wiener posted on X. “All of these strategies — speed limiters, truck side guards, smart street designs — are proven safety strategies. It’s time for California to adopt them.”

The proposal comes after California in 2022 mandated that all new cars and light trucks sold in the state must be zero-emission by 2035.

I wish the automakers would tell that state to fuck off with their bullshit already. Every time those faggots come up with some new bullshit for cars it fucks the rest of the country over.
I wish that also. An example is that 17 other states have adopted California vehicle smog requirements. :mad3::mad3::mad3:

  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Maine

prevent California drivers from going 10 mph or more over the posted speed limit in any given area.

So we're going to depend on Google Maps and Waze to accurately report the speed limit in the area? Or are the cars going to have scanners to read the signs and adjust? What if you are on a road that has no posted speed limit?

so it limits the speeds to +10 for the area it's in. which means they are gonna need GPS trackers on them to know the given speed limit. not a back door way to track the local population or anything.
I;d be willing to bet theres no new car out there that isn't already tracking you.

I'm assuming it is going to use whatever your vehicle's navigation app is. Google maps will warn you if you are speeding if your location is turned on.

If the road doesn't have a posted speed, just drive as fast as you can .

because it works so well on semi's

This bill is just one more example of a stupid politician proposing something that's really not feasible with today's tech.

I know I'm nitpicking but VA as state hasn't. Just some counties and cities in Northern VA.

Isn't this "tracking" crap part of the ADAS on 2024+ vehicles already?

...aside...local "news reports" said that a missing guy's "license plate had been pinged" at various locations.

Oh nooo, no one is tracking your movement in public, nope we'd never do that... :mad3:

Gary; looking up more stories about california... because there's nary a fucking thing going on in Idaho.

"Sha hog luss started" shouts his wife from another room.

its 100% feasible with "today's" tech. Google maps know EVERY SINGLE SPEED zone. and guess what? if they get one wrong? so what? your speed limiter is still in place and better slower and faster because whatever California will explain.
