Moab Rim!!

Shitty. It looks like the cage did its job. Not familiar with the area, how far down is the drop off?

I've ran that trail lots of times. It's damn near a cliff straight down. Gotta be a couple hundred feet straight down. Overlooks the river. The trail up to the mesa has multiple obstacles, all moderately easy, but with just enough off camber and bumps to get your heart pumping. News article implied mechanical failure on the rig, which I can see creating a very dangerous situation very quickly. .. As always with these type articles, I wonder on alcohol use and seat belts.

It’s been ten plus years since I’ve been to Moab, but I remember the long drops off the side of that trail would put you on the road that runs along the river? That pic in the article looks like it wasn’t that far of a roll but over other ledges on the trail.

There is a section on a lower part of the trail. I looked at the map, and compared it to the rollover. If you know the trail, not far from the start, before you get to the two major obstacles, there is an section that is off camber towards the cliff. To make it more interesting, the whole area is about twelve feet wide between a large boulder and the edge of the cliff. For me, it is the scariest part of the trail. I think that is where it happened, and it looks like they were headed off the trail. After that corner, there is really not much to worry about. It is about a hundred, to hundred fifty foot drop to Kane Creek rd.

Incidentally, there were two dead, so the cage would have done its job if they were wearing seatbelts.

Not looking for gore, but is there video to see what happened. I’m not familiar with the trail, but have watched a bunch of the 2021 EJS videos. What obstacle should I YouTube to see where this was.

The closing shot in the news clip shows looking from the bottom facing east on Kane Creek blvd looking up. 40' or so down where they went off. Farther up its way farther down. No joke at all. Any MRT video on youtube will show the first 1000 feet of trail and the couple obstacles.

Looks to be just West of the first power pole. You can get on Maps and zoom in and see where that power pole is.

Ahhh, I see now, watched this one a few times. Can see the road below in the first 20 seconds. Im sure the spotter was scared shitless.

That's a bummer. It looks to me like the first real "obstacle" of the trail. (Or last, depending). Literally 1/4 mile or less from the parking lot. It's not a hard obstacle, but I could see how you could fawk up and flop if you didn't have the line. But there is room enough to flop and not go over the cliff if you're at crawling speed.

Coming downhill too fast or have a brake failure and it could get exciting.

RIP wheelers. Hopefully this won't be another nail in the coffin of trail closures.

I ran MR a couple of years ago and the Moab book doesn’t lie when it says the first thousand feet of Moab Rims terrifies most people. If that JK would have went a few more feet backwards it would have went at least a couple hundred feet straight down and landed on Kane Creek road.

The best part of doing the rim for the first time is knowing you have to face that same obstacle on the way out.

Did that trail in 2006 or so, and we did it as a night run...seemed like a good idea at the time. Dude from my club that is leading us is a FA/22 pilot in a built TJ, and I've got our mandatory Subarban on 40's driver riding bitch with me. The skys open up and dump what seems like 5" per hour rain on us, rivers of muddy water running down the trail and pelting our rigs. Not gonna lie, we turned tail and headed back to camp. USAF dude said he'd been less scared with SAMs being fired at him.

I was on that trail last year in the RZR. I got up to that first ledge and said NOPE and turned around. I am a bit freaked out by heights and my nerves were shot. the obstacle itself isn't that bad. it's the cliff you can roll off of that scared me the most.. We are going back in a couple weeks and a buddy in a 4 seat UTV said he'd go first and let the rest of the group tie off to him if we wanted.

Busted a rear axle at a big ledge near the top. Had to pull the driveshaft and come done in Front Wheel Drive in my 99 Amigo. That was fun!

Watched this video a couple weeks ago. 1:45, Terrifying to say the least.

That trail scared the crap out of me. It's not difficult, but the penalty for failure is very high.

Never been there, but the vids are plenty scary!

If it's truly 100-150' down, would a cage/belts make any difference?

in my mind dropping that far, even 100', the cage isn't going to help you. if you are belted in the Gs you experience with that sudden stop would kill you DED

Going to be in Moab next week with a CJ group, just checked the itinerary and it looks like we won't be doing Moab Rim.

I had seen the video posted above with the black jeep trying to reverse off of the cliff but it didn't worry me enough to check, seeing the CJ5 buggy thing all beat up did it.

During the day, even raining when we did it, it wasn't to big of a deal in Gayzers. The visibility is excellent out of them though, and you can see your tire and don't feel like you're tipping over. In my JK it would likely be different, that thing in one giant rolling stupid blind spot. That said, if we do a jeep trip there again I won't be scared to do it in the mall jeep, just be aware of the hazard and have contingencies in mind

I had a friend roll a quad off Moab Rim in 2014. Luckily the quad rolled over the top of him and he wasn't hurt. The quad landed on the road down below on its wheels.
