What one do I want?
no idea what exactly I want it for but it sounds fun

do any of them allow you to see the difference between something the size of a nail vs a soup can? What if the nail is at 1" and the soup can is at 6"

A different tone for non ferrous would be cool

Gold Monster 1000. At least, that's what most of the prospectors swear by. Size, metal and depth you'll learn by listening to the tones it puts off.

I was watching Dan Hurd on YouTube few days ago he was using gold monster

Wow that sucker is 900 bucks. I would like to find something for about 1/3 that price that I would use a few times a year.

That reminds me, I need to put some batteries in the kiddy one and throw some change in the backyard for the boy to entertain himself:laughing:

He's gonna be pissed when he figures it out

It will find any piece of metal or rock in the area.

It depends on what you are going to be looking for (coins, relics or gold) as to what detector to get. I look for gold and use the gold monster 1000, I can find gold with it that other detectors missed

I've got a whites spectrum that my wife inherited from her father and it works pretty well and I think they would be in your budget. I need to re-work the battery pack, but otherwise still kicks ass.

Metal Detectors are like any other tool. Buy once, cry once.

Another example is people buy these stupid $500-1000 thermals and expect results. They are only disappointed when they cant see or ID what they are looking at and end up saving for what they should have bought in the first place.

Metal detectors are exactly the same. A good metal detector can read past / under a can of spam and pick up a button or coin 8" below it. I had no idea until a group of nerds (semi pro archaeologist) came out to my property with the real deal metal detectors and taught me more in 2 hours than I learned in 5 years with my "Cabela's" (any hunting/sporting goods store) set up. They found over 80 artifacts in a weekend on a campsite they found by overlaying decades worth of maps. Very cool stuff.

That said- not cool enough for me to go drop that kinda coin. I'd rather have a top end thermal. :smokin:

Read some threads on treasurenet.com. Someone asks this qustion once a week there.

love my garrett AT pro. Its been rock solid for years and its waterproof.

get a good pin pointer

Just signed up over there, thanks.

good group of people on there and the people at metaldetectingforum.com
They are good at ID'ing weird shit too. I actually ordered my detector from a vendor on detecting forums.

Yeah, nothing gets my mind going more then the idea or stories of real life treasure hunting so I'm sure I'll spend way to much time reading.

treasurenet will be a rabbit hole then:laughing: the symbols/signs/treasure marks section is a giant rabbit hole plus the legends section.

you are out west, lots of good stories or lost treasures...

Per the advice of a local metal detector shop, my wife and I each got a Minelabs Vanquish 440. Since we didn't know if we were even going to enjoy using them or not, we didn't want to spend a lot. This was the model he recommended. We still haven't used them 6 months later...

I need to find angle iron buried around 2ft underground. Able to stick it in water and find things underneath also. Any recommendations?

I recently bought a Garrett Apex with the Viper coil. No complaints yet. It really requires you to get educated with your detector and pay attention to what the screen says when you dig the object out. If it was garbage, you can block that area out. You can also turn off iron tones but I like finding relics so I keep it on. No matter what, you will dig a lot of bullshit out of the grown. 22 shells seem to be sprinkled everywhere. I have even dug the actual 22 bullets up. I recently found a handmade hoe and shovel along with a horseshoe. I mostly search in the woods. Plowed fields are best because the turn shit up that would normally be too deep.

I have a Garrett Ace250 which suits me well for casual searching. It has the ability to filter out metals or dial in to just detect certain metals. Helps to not waste time on pull tabs.
BUT the best thing I ever did was get the propointer. A small hand held metal detecting wand to focus right in on the buried treasure. The Ace250 finds the spot, and the propointer leads you right to the item.
Very VERY handy when you drop a small nut or screw in the grass.

Now a year and six plus months later, we still haven’t used them. Glad we didn’t spend a fortune!
